It is the bottleneck of the Siliguri Corridor, the 22-km-wide strip of land that connects mainland India to the entire Northeast, and it doubles as the staging post for four international borders: Nepal at Panitanki, Bhutan via Jaigaon and Phuentsholing, and Bangladesh through Fulbari and Changrabandha. Any business that crates tea, repacks border-trade cargo, ships engineering goods to the Northeast, or consolidates freight through the New Jalpaiguri rail yard ends up buying plywood, sawn timber, pallets and container-floor boards. We manufacture that material in Kerala and ship it across the country, and Siliguri's mix of tea-export packing and cross-border transshipment is one of the more interesting demand profiles in eastern India.

Packing-grade demand in Siliguri spreads across several distinct belts rather than one large estate. Knowing where the buyer sits usually decides the drop point and the order size.

Industrial belts and clusters

Matigara industrial area — light engineering units, food processing, and a cluster of packing-case workshops that feed the tea estates uphill.

Dabgram industrial estate (WBIDC) — the largest organised estate in the city, mixed-use with steel fabrication, agri-equipment and consumer-goods assembly. Pallet and crate consumption here is steady and recurring.

Salugara and Fulbari belts — closer to the Bangladesh border crossing, dominated by transshipment yards, jute-and-agri export packers and timber re-handling operations.

Bagdogra and the surrounding tea-handling depots — Darjeeling, Dooars and Terai tea moves through Siliguri auction centres and private warehouses before export. Plywood tea chests, shooks and inner-liner boards are a year-round line item.

Sectors driving plywood demand

Tea-export packing — chests, cartons with ply bases, pallets for container stuffing at Kolkata and Haldia.

Border-trade cargo — Bhutan-bound engineering and consumer goods, Nepal-bound bulk consumer goods, Bangladesh transshipment.

Automotive spares and two-wheeler parts repacked for Northeast distribution.

Pharma and consumer-goods warehousing — export pallets and secondary packaging.

Construction along Siliguri's high-growth real-estate corridor on NH27 — shuttering plywood for slab and column work.

What we ship

What we manufacture for Siliguri loads

Most Siliguri orders fall into four buckets. The specs below are our standard offer; we tune thickness and face-veneer to the buyer's box design or load condition.

Packing-grade plywood for crates and cases

Our MR-Packing grade is the workhorse. Sheet size 8x4 ft, thicknesses 6 mm to 18 mm. Face-veneer options include hardwood, Gurjan and Okoume — Gurjan and Okoume are veneer choices on the same packing or BWR substrate, not separate grades. For tea-chest plywood and inner liners, 4 mm and 6 mm move fastest; for one-trip export crates of machinery, 12 mm and 18 mm are the common picks.

Application

Thickness

Face option

Tea-chest plywood, inner liners

4 mm, 6 mm

Hardwood

Domestic crates, secondary packing

8 mm, 10 mm

Hardwood / Gurjan

One-trip export crates, machinery

12 mm, 18 mm

Hardwood / Okoume

Container flooring (repair / rebuild)

28 mm

Hardwood, phenolic film

Made-up crates and shooks

For buyers who want crate kits rather than raw sheets, we cut and bundle shooks — sides, ends, tops, bottoms and runners — to drawing. This suits tea exporters who do not want to run a saw shop on-site and engineering-goods packers handling odd-lot dimensions.

Pallets

Two-way and four-way entry pallets in standard 1200x1000 mm and 1200x800 mm footprints, plus custom sizes for tea-chest stacking. Heat-treated and ISPM-15 stamped on request for export consignments through Kolkata and Haldia.

Container flooring

28 mm BWP container-floor plywood, hardwood face, with phenolic film options. Siliguri demand comes from container-repair yards and from operators rebuilding the floors of long-haul reefer and dry boxes used on the Bhutan, Bangladesh and Northeast India circuit.

Logistics

Kochi-to-Siliguri logistics

The trunk distance from Kochi/Ernakulam to Siliguri is roughly 2,400 km by road. We work three lanes depending on volume and timeline.

Mode

Route

Transit (working days)

Best for

Direct road

NH-544 / NH-44 / NH-27 via Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Kolkata, then NH27 to Siliguri

7–10 days

Full-truck orders, urgent crate kits

Rail + last-mile road

Ernakulam to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) goods rake, then 12 km road to consignee

10–14 days

Heavy bulk orders, cost-sensitive buyers

Coastal + road

Cochin Port to Kolkata/Haldia, then ~600 km road to Siliguri via NH12 and NH27

12–16 days

Container-flooring quantities, mixed export loads

Most buyers default to the direct road lane. We quote ex-factory Perumbavoor; freight is billed separately and is the honest variable. We do not bundle a padded freight figure into the sheet rate. For export consignments, pallets are heat-treated and ISPM-15 stamped so the phytosanitary documentation is ready for routing through Kolkata, Haldia or the land borders.

Choosing a grade

Which grade for which Siliguri load

Three grade-and-veneer choices come up most often.

MR-Packing with hardwood face — the default for domestic crates, tea-chest secondary packaging and Bhutan-bound consumer goods. Best price-to-performance for single-trip wood boxes.

BWR substrate with Okoume face — when the box has to look presentable at the consignee, when the cargo is moisture-sensitive, or when the buyer is invoicing an overseas customer who specifies a uniform light face-veneer. Common in premium tea exports and engineering goods crated for GCC and EU destinations through Kolkata.

Shuttering plywood (filmfaced) — only for the construction buyer. The Siliguri real-estate belt along Sevoke Road and Matigara uses 12 mm and 18 mm filmfaced ply for slab and column work. Do not confuse this with packing demand; the buyer profile and reuse expectation are different.

FAQ

Siliguri supply questions

Do you supply ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets for tea and engineering exports?

Yes. Pallets are heat-treated and ISPM-15 stamped in our facilities. We quote per pallet with the stamp included, and the buyer gets the phytosanitary documentation needed for export consignments routed through Kolkata, Haldia or the land borders.

What is the minimum order for a direct shipment to Siliguri?

A full truck — about 18–22 tonnes, roughly 350–500 sheets depending on thickness — gives the cleanest economics. Smaller orders are possible on the rail plus last-mile lane, but the per-sheet landed cost climbs. We share both options on every quote so the buyer picks.

Can you cut to size, or supply sheets only?

Both. Sheets are the cheaper unit. Cut-to-size shooks add a per-sheet conversion charge but eliminate the buyer's saw-shop labour and offcut wastage. For tea-chest shooks and crate kits this almost always pays back.

Get a quote

Request a Siliguri quote

If you are a Siliguri-based crate maker, tea exporter, border-trade packer or container-yard operator, send us a one-line brief — sheet specification or crate drawing, monthly quantity and the delivery PIN — and we will come back with an ex-factory rate, the freight line for your lane and a lead time we can hold. Greater Kolkata is not a single market — it is at least four overlapping ones, and each has its own packing logic.

Kolkata Dock System and Haldia Dock Complex: break-bulk and container traffic for engineering goods, tea chests, jute bales and project cargo. Crate-heavy.

Howrah industrial belt — Liluah, Belur, Bally, Dasnagar, Salkia: foundries, light engineering, wire and bar units, fan and pump makers. Heavy, dense loads that need stiff plywood cases and pallets.

Kasba, Topsia and Tangra: leather goods, tannery output and small engineering — lighter export crates, often on jute-and-ply combination packing.

Falta SEZ, Bantala Leather Complex, Kalyani and Dankuni industrial zones: export-oriented units with steady heat-treated pallet and case demand.

Add the tea auction trade routed through Kolkata from North Bengal and Assam, the jute mills along the Hooghly from Titagarh down to Budge Budge, and the project cargo that moves through Khidderpore for power, metro and refinery work across the East and North-East, and the picture is consistent: packing-grade plywood is one of this city's working consumables.

What we ship

The lines we dispatch east

We manufacture the packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets we ship from our own facilities to Cochin Wood specifications. To Kolkata buyers we typically dispatch the following.

Packing-grade plywood (MR / commercial)

The workhorse for crate panels, case lids, internal partitions and engineered packing. Standard sheet is 8 ft × 4 ft, with thickness commonly run from 6 mm to 18 mm. The thicknesses Kolkata foundry packers ask for most often are 8 mm, 12 mm and 18 mm — 8 mm for case sides and tops on light engineering loads, 12 mm for medium-duty machinery crates, 18 mm for heavy base panels and pallet decks.

Thickness

Typical Kolkata use

6–8 mm

Case sides, tops and lids on light engineering loads

10–12 mm

Medium-duty machinery crates, partitions

14–16 mm

Reinforced sides for dense foundry castings

18 mm

Heavy base panels and pallet decks

Face veneer options on the MR-Packing and BWR grades include Okoume and Gurjan. Okoume is the lighter, cleaner face preferred by exporters who pay container freight by weight.

Crate kits and case-ready cuts

For repeat exporters in Howrah and Falta we ship pre-cut panel sets keyed to a drawing: base, four sides, top and corner runners. The kit lands at the customer's nail-gun line and assembles directly. This saves cutting wastage and keeps dust off the shop floor — important for tea and food-grade exporters in particular.

Pallets, heat-treated and stamped

Standard footprints we ship east are 1200 × 1000 mm (the pallet most engineering exporters use), 1200 × 800 mm (Euro pallet) and 1100 × 1100 mm (used in some South-East Asia and Far-East lanes Kolkata exporters serve). Heat-treatment and the IPPC stamp are mandatory for all wood packaging leaving Indian ports under ISPM-15; every pallet we dispatch carries the stamp and the lot record.

Container flooring and sawn timber

For the heavier project loads that move out of Khidderpore — transformers, paper-mill rolls, heavy castings — we supply 28 mm container-flooring grade plywood and dressed sawn timber runners for skids and dunnage. Jackwood and rubberwood runner stock is available in the sizes most lashing crews specify.

Logistics

Kochi to Kolkata: the lane

The distance from Perumbavoor / Kochi to Kolkata is roughly 2,000 km by road. Practical lane behaviour:

Mode

Transit time

Typical use

Full-truck (32-ft / 20-ft multi-axle)

6–8 days door-to-door

Full-load sheet stock, bundled crate kits, pallet decks

Part-load (LTL via Bengaluru / Hyderabad hubs)

9–12 days

Smaller repeat orders, sample crates

Coastal container (Cochin → Kolkata / Haldia)

10–14 days port-to-port

Larger consolidated loads where coastal economics work out

The road route runs Kochi — Bengaluru — Hyderabad — Vijayawada — Visakhapatnam — Bhubaneswar — Kharagpur — Kolkata, mostly on NH-16 once east of Hyderabad. Coastal shipping via Cochin Port to Kolkata or Haldia is occasionally the better option for full-container moves of pallet-deck stock; we work it out per quote. Every pallet and crate dispatched on this lane carries the ISPM-15 heat-treatment stamp and lot record.

Choosing a grade

Picking the right grade for a Kolkata load

The decision rule is usually about the destination, the freight and the customer of the customer. A few practical patterns:

Domestic / regional engineering crate moving from Howrah to the North-East or to a project site: MR-grade packing plywood, 12–18 mm, Gurjan face. Lowest cost per crate where freight is not the binding constraint.

Export crate (Europe, USA, Australia): BWR / BWP plywood with Okoume face. Lower density means a lighter crate, which matters when sea-freight is rated on chargeable weight or an air-freight conversion is on the table.

Wet-zone packing (jute mills, tea cartons holding for monsoon): BWR grade with a boiling-water-resistant glue line. Higher upfront cost, lower failure rate through Bengal's long humid stretch.

Shuttering / formwork for construction: a separate film-faced product. Not the same as packing ply. Use it for civil work, not for crates.

Our pricing is structured ex-factory with GST and transport extra. Detail thicknesses, monthly quantity and the delivery zone (Howrah, Khidderpore, Falta, Dankuni, Kalyani and the like) and we will work a landed cost for your gate.

FAQ

What Kolkata buyers usually ask

Do you supply directly to Howrah and Liluah small-unit packers, or only to large exporters?

Both. Our minimum dispatch is typically a part-truck for sheet stock or a single pallet skid for samples. We work with small Howrah engineering packers as readily as with Falta SEZ exporters.

What is your lead time once a PI is confirmed?

Standard packing-grade ply: 4–6 working days for production-ready stock and dispatch from Kochi, then the road or coastal transit on top. Custom-cut crate kits add 2–3 days of cutting.

Can you handle ISPM-15 documentation for our shipping line?

Yes. Every pallet and crate carries the IPPC stamp, and we supply the heat-treatment certificate along with the invoice and e-way bill. Most Kolkata CHA offices accept the format directly.

Walk through Belur, Liluah, Salkia or the Andul Road belt and you will see foundries pouring grey iron, fabrication units rolling boiler shells, and engineering exporters preparing crates for shipments that often weigh more than a small car. Every one of those shipments needs wood underneath it, around it, and between it and the container floor.

The buyer profile here is concentrated in a small number of well-known belts:

Liluah and Bamangachi — historically a railway-workshop town, now dense with structural fabrication, forging shops and ancillary engineering units feeding the railways and the steel sector.

Belur and Bally — heavy fabrication, jute machinery, marine equipment and a long-standing cluster of grey-iron and SG-iron foundries.

Salkia and Ghusuri — older mixed-use industrial pockets with sheet-metal, hardware and packaging-conversion units.

Dasnagar, Domjur and Andul Road — newer engineering, casting and export-oriented sheds, including larger pump, valve and switchgear units that ship to the Gulf and South-East Asia.

Howrah Dock and the Kolkata Port system — Netaji Subhas Dock, Khidirpur and the Haldia outport handle the export side, and a lot of crated cargo from Howrah moves through these gates.

The thread running through all of these is heavy, dense, point-loaded cargo: castings, machined components, pump bodies, valve assemblies, transformer parts, switchgear cabinets and structural sub-assemblies. That cargo needs packaging engineered for weight and shock, not shelf appeal, which is why demand here leans firmly toward packing-grade hardwood plywood rather than decorative material.

What we ship

Sheets, crates, pallets and container flooring

Our Howrah programme is built around the sectors above, and a typical order falls into one of four buckets.

1. Packing-grade plywood sheets

This is our core line: hardwood-core, MR-bonded plywood engineered for one-trip industrial packaging rather than furniture. Standard sizes are 8x4 ft, with thicknesses pulled from this card.

Thickness

Typical use in Howrah crates

6 mm

Lightweight lids, dunnage separators, void fillers

8 mm

Side panels for medium crates up to ~500 kg

10–12 mm

Sides and tops for general engineering crates 500–2,000 kg

15–16 mm

Heavy crate sides, base sheathing for foundry castings

18 mm

Crate bases, skid sheathing, container-flooring patches

For Howrah's casting and machinery loads, the 12 mm, 15 mm and 18 mm sheets do most of the work. We rate prices ex-factory; GST and transport are extra, and we quote against a confirmed thickness-size-quantity-destination set rather than a generic list.

2. Wooden crates and packing cases

For buyers who would rather receive finished crates than convert sheets in-house, we manufacture crates built to drawing — softwood or hardwood battened frames sheathed with our packing-grade plywood, screwed or nailed to engineering specification. ISPM-15 heat-treated and IPPC-marked timber is available for any export crate, which matters for almost every shipment heading out through Kolkata or Haldia to the Gulf, South-East Asia, Europe or North America.

3. Wooden pallets

Common pallet sizes for the Howrah belt are 1200 x 1000 mm (general engineering), 1200 x 800 mm (Euro footprint for European exporters) and 1100 x 1100 mm (common in container stuffing for Far East trade). Pallets are built from hardwood runners with plywood or sawn-timber decks, again ISPM-15 stamped where the consignee requires it.

4. Container flooring and dunnage

For exporters who stuff their own containers — especially foundries shipping castings and machine builders shipping skidded equipment — 18 mm packing-grade plywood is widely used as container-flooring overlay, deck patching and heavy dunnage between rows. We ship full bundles for this purpose alongside the main crate order.

Logistics

The Kochi-to-Howrah lane

Howrah sits roughly 2,000 km by road from Kochi. The standard movement is a full-truck load on the NH-66 → NH-44 → NH-16 corridor via Bengaluru, Vijayawada and Bhubaneswar, with transit typically running 5–7 days door-to-door depending on season, driver-change pattern and the gate timings at the receiving estate. For very large repeat programmes, coastal sailings from Cochin Port to Kolkata or Haldia are sometimes a cleaner economic option, particularly for full 20-ft or 40-ft consignments of finished crates and pallets where road-damage risk is higher.

In either case, freight and GST are quoted separately from the ex-factory rate, and we plan dispatch around the buyer's stuffing or production calendar rather than our own. Loading plans, truck capacity, headroom and unloading-charge expectations are documented up front on the proforma invoice. Where an export consignment needs ISPM-15 heat-treated, IPPC-stamped timber, we flag it at PI stage so it flows through to the dispatch paperwork.

Choosing a grade

Packing grade vs Okoume face vs shuttering ply

Buyers in Howrah occasionally ask whether they should be specifying an Okoume face or even shuttering ply for their crates. A simple rule of thumb:

Hardwood packing grade — the default choice for foundry castings, structural fabrication, pump and valve crates, and any one-trip export packaging. Strong, fairly priced and engineered for the job.

Okoume face on the packing or BWR grade — Okoume is a face-veneer option, not a separate grade. It is worth the premium when the consignee is sensitive to face appearance (premium equipment, GCC and European projects) or where the crate doubles as display packaging on site.

Shuttering plywood — only when the customer is actually a construction or infrastructure buyer, not a crate buyer. Shuttering grades are formulated for repeat concrete pours, not one-trip packaging.

For most Howrah enquiries — a foundry sending castings to a Gulf project, or an engineering exporter crating valves for Vietnam — the right answer is hardwood packing grade in 12, 15 and 18 mm, with ISPM-15 timber framing where the destination demands it.

FAQ

Common questions from Howrah buyers

What is a realistic lead time from Kochi to Howrah?

Plan on 5–7 days road transit after dispatch for a full truck. For first-time orders, build in an extra 3–5 working days for sheet production, crate fabrication and quality check before the truck moves.

Do you supply ISPM-15 certified crates and pallets?

Yes. Any crate or pallet destined for export can be built from heat-treated, IPPC-stamped timber. We note this requirement at PI stage so it flows through to the dispatch paperwork.

Can you handle blanket orders for monthly drawdown?

Yes. For Howrah buyers with steady monthly volumes — particularly foundries and engineering exporters with predictable shipment calendars — we run blanket arrangements with a fixed price for a defined period and call-off dispatches against the agreed volume.

Every one of those movements needs wood — packing-grade plywood for export crates, hardwood pallets for forklift handling, runners and gluts for heavy castings, and container-floor-grade ply for stuffed export consignments leaving via Kolkata, Haldia and Paradip. Asansol-Durgapur is treated as a single metropolitan industrial region under the Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA), and the wood-packaging demand is best read belt by belt.

Coal and mining: the Raniganj coalfield

The Raniganj basin around Sanctoria and Dishergarh is one of the oldest mined coal basins in the country. The downstream packaging demand here is rarely about coal itself; it is about capital equipment going into the mines — longwall shearers, conveyor belt drums, switchgear, transformer panels, hydraulic roof supports, pumps, motors and spare-part shipments inbound from equipment makers. All of these move in heavy plywood crates on certified pallets.

Steel: the Burnpur works and the auxiliary belt

The integrated steel plant at Burnpur is the anchor facility, modernised to roughly 2.5 MTPA of crude steel. Around it sits a dense ring of rolling mills, foundries, refractory plants and steel-fabrication units across the Burnpur-Kulti-Hirapur axis. Demand here is for heavy-load crates around mill rolls, gear boxes, refractory blocks, and finished steel parcels being skidded for road movement. Pallets and runners tend to be 19 mm and thicker, with sawn hardwood gluts to take the point loads off the ply.

Engineering, cement and railways

The Durgapur side of the corridor adds an alloy-steel plant, mining-machinery makers and a heavy-electricals unit, along with several private engineering shops; the cement clusters around Chittaranjan and Salanpur add bagged-cargo and machinery packing demand. ADDA's Mangalpur and Bamunara industrial estates round out the SME base. A major locomotive works near Asansol ships spares and sub-assemblies in heavy ply crates, and export-oriented consignments route through the Kolkata and Haldia dock systems for break-bulk or container stuffing — which is where container-floor-grade and BWR ply come in.

What we ship

The SKUs that move in this corridor

The product mix that lands well in the Asansol belt is narrower than our full range. It machines cleanly, nails without splitting and presents better at customs inspection. Quoted on request.

Hardwood pallets and runners

Standard sizes we build to: 1200 x 1000 mm and 1200 x 800 mm, two-way and four-way entry. Heavier 1219 x 1016 mm (48 in x 40 in) GMA-style pallets for North American export consignments. Jackwood and rubberwood runners are supplied at ₹400/cft (jackwood) and as-per-size (rubberwood); the standard tolerance reads as ¼ inch minus on jackwood.

Container flooring and shuttering ply

For stuffed export containers we supply 18 mm BWR-grade ply suited for floor lining. For the construction side — slab work at the cement, power and infra projects in the corridor — film-faced shuttering plywood is available in standard sheet sizes.

Logistics

Kochi to Asansol: the lane economics

Asansol is roughly 2,000 km by road from Kochi. That is not a short trip, but for repeating bulk orders the trucking lane is well-established and predictable.

Road, full-truck: 32-ft single-axle or multi-axle from Perumbavoor / Kochi, routed via Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Raipur and into West Bengal — transit typically 7 to 9 days door-to-door, depending on the trailer type and the season.

Coastal + road: for very large volumes we can break the trip — sea leg from Cochin Port (Vallarpadam / ICTT) up to Haldia or Kolkata, then short-haul road into Asansol (around 230 km from Kolkata). This usually only pencils out above 2–3 container-equivalents per consignment.

Rail container: container trains from south India terminals to ICDs in the east are available; lane economics shift quarterly, so we price each load individually.

Volume-wise, a single 32-ft trailer carries roughly 1,000–1,200 sheets of 12 mm packing ply depending on the stacking plan. Truck-load economics are the single biggest variable in the landed price into Asansol, which is why we quote ex-factory and transport separately rather than bury it in the sheet rate. Where the order is export-bound, ISPM-15 heat-treated and stamped pallets and crates are supplied with the IPPC mark and the certificate alongside the consignment.

Choosing a grade

Which grade for which load

Inland packing, single-trip crates inside India: MR-bonded packing-grade ply, 12 mm sides, 18 mm base. Lowest landed cost per crate.

Export crates, OEM machinery, sea voyage: step up to a BWR core, Okoume face on the visible surfaces, 18 mm base with hardwood gluts under heavy point loads.

Container floor lining and dunnage: 18 mm BWR. A single sheet across the container width where possible, to avoid joints under wheel loads.

Mining / heavy electrical equipment crates: 15 to 18 mm sides, hardwood corner posts, base sized for the lifting-tackle profile rather than the cargo footprint.

Construction slab work in the Asansol-Durgapur corridor: film-faced shuttering ply, not packing-grade. The two are not interchangeable.

FAQ

Common questions from Asansol buyers

Is it worth buying plywood from Kerala when sources in Yamunanagar or Kolkata are closer?

For one-off small orders, no. For repeating bulk packing-grade demand — say a full truck a month or more — our mill rates plus the trucking lane are competitive on landed cost, and the consistency of the core construction tends to be tighter because of how we specify and run our manufacturing.

Do you supply ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets for export?

Yes. ISPM-15 compliant heat-treated and stamped pallets and crates are available; we quote the IPPC stamp and the certificate together with the order.

What is the minimum order size you ship into West Bengal?

The economics work cleanly from a full 32-ft trailer upward. We can consolidate smaller part-loads where another consignment is already routed in the same direction, but the per-sheet rate moves up accordingly.

Get a quote

Send the specs, get a workable number

If you run a packing operation, an export crate workshop, a pallet line, or an EPC project in the Asansol-Durgapur belt, the cleanest way to get a workable number is to send us the thickness, sheet size, monthly quantity and delivery pin code. We come back with an ex-factory rate, an indicative trucking cost on the Kochi-Asansol lane, and a sample of the relevant grade if you need to test it before placing the first order. Forty years of group manufacturing since 1986 sit behind every sheet that leaves Perumbavoor, and we are happy to be measured on the load that actually arrives in Asansol. Request a quote, or read the grade sheets and FAQs in the resource hub before talking commercials.

Mining and allied machinery makers, plus a cluster of foundries, forging units and alloy-steel re-rollers, ship finished goods that must survive a 1,500 to 2,500 km road or rail journey before they reach the end customer. Every one of those movements creates a plywood requirement: packing-grade panels for case sides, hardwood runners for skids, and container flooring for export consolidation.

For a plywood manufacturer the city is attractive because the bulk demand is concentrated rather than scattered. A handful of estates absorb most of the wooden-packaging tonnage.

Estates and belts to know

The integrated steel-plant township and approach roads — coil packing, plate-banding skids and ancillary structural shipments.

The heavy mining-machinery industrial belt — draglines, conveyor parts and large machinery that ship in custom-built crates with thick base boards.

The state power-equipment and fabrication area — fabrication shops and power-equipment ancillaries.

WBIIDC industrial estates: Bidhannagar (Durgapur), Bamunara, Rajbandh, Muchipara, Gopalpur — secondary engineering, alloy-steel re-rollers, refractories and a growing cluster of light-engineering units that crate finished goods for dispatch.

Sponge-iron and ferro-alloy clusters around Raniganj–Andal–Pandaveswar — adjacent to Durgapur and pulling from the same packing supply chain.

The common thread is heavy goods that need wooden packaging built to handle weight and abrasion, not consumer-grade boxes. That is exactly the slot packing-grade plywood is designed for.

What we ship

Three product lines pull most of the Durgapur volume

We manufacture through our own facilities in Perumbavoor to consistent specifications, which is how grade and thickness tolerance stay even across pan-India dispatches. For Durgapur, three lines carry the weight, with an Okoume face available as an option on top.

Packing-grade plywood (commercial / rubberwood face)

Used for case sides, lids, base panels and partition boards inside steel-coil and machinery crates. Standard sheet size is 8 ft x 4 ft (2440 x 1220 mm). Indicative thickness range and ex-factory rates (GST and freight extra):

Thickness

Typical use

Ex-factory rate (Rs/sq.ft)

6 mm

Light partitions, separators

24

8 mm

Inner liners

28

10 mm

Side panels, light cases

31.5

12 mm

Standard case sides and lids

33.5

15-16 mm

Heavier crate panels

39 - 39.5

18 mm

Base boards, machinery crates

42

For steel-coil packing the typical pull is 12 mm and 15 mm in volume, with 18 mm reserved for base boards under heavy coils.

Sawn timber runners and skids

Plywood panels are only half the crate. The structural skeleton — runners, headers, base skids — is sawn hardwood. We supply jackwood at Rs 400 per cft (quarter-inch minus tolerance) and rubberwood runners as per the sizes the customer's design calls for. Most Durgapur crate makers cut their own runners from sized stock, so we ship in standard scantling.

Container flooring and export crates

Exporters routing through Kolkata and Haldia for shipments out of eastern India often need 18 mm panels at the boiling-water-resistant grade for container flooring or for crates that will see a sea voyage. Where the box has to last six weeks in marine humidity, we recommend stepping up to BWR rather than running standard packing ply.

Okoume-faced premium packing

Okoume is a face-veneer option layered onto the packing or BWR core, not a separate grade. It is the right choice when the consignee is overseas, when crate aesthetics matter (display goods, precision instruments) or when the surface needs to be smoother and brand-printable. Quoted separately on request.

Logistics

Kochi to Durgapur — the lane reality

The road distance from Kochi to Durgapur is approximately 2,050 km. The practical route runs Kochi → Bengaluru → Hyderabad → Vijayawada → Visakhapatnam → Bhubaneswar → Kharagpur → Durgapur, mostly on NH-44, NH-16 and NH-19. We dispatch in full-truck loads: a single 32-ft multi-axle trailer carries roughly 24-26 tonnes of sheet stock, and a full load works out cheaper per sq.ft than part-load once you cross about 800 sheets of 12 mm.

Transit time: typically 6-8 days door-to-door by road, depending on the season and Odisha-coast weather.

Rail option: for very large standing orders, parcel-rake or container-rake economics start to make sense, but most Durgapur buyers stay on road for flexibility.

Port routing: for export-bound buyers we can ship FOB Cochin or DDU Haldia/Kolkata when the end customer is overseas, useful for heavy-machinery exporters crating for sea freight.

Export packing: where the consignment leaves India, the crate timber can be supplied ISPM-15 compliant (heat-treated and IPPC-marked) so it clears phytosanitary inspection at the destination.

Choosing a grade

Which grade for which load?

Use packing-grade (commercial / rubberwood-faced) when:

The crate will be opened at the destination within 4-6 weeks.

The freight is road or short-haul rail within India.

Cost-per-sheet matters and the load is well under the panel's structural limit.

Use BWR / boiling-water-resistant when:

The crate sees humid storage, monsoon transit or a sea leg.

The end use is container flooring or marine-export packing, where an IS 710 BWP-grade panel is the right specification.

Use shuttering ply when:

The need is concrete formwork for plant expansion, not packing — common for projects inside the steel-plant and power-equipment complexes.

Add an Okoume face when:

The crate carries premium or branded goods.

The buyer specifies a smoother surface or better screw-holding for repeated assembly.

FAQ

Durgapur supply questions

What is the minimum order quantity you ship to Durgapur?

Most Durgapur dispatches are full-truck loads, and mixed thickness on one truck is fine. For trial orders we can co-load with another West Bengal destination, but the freight per sq.ft is meaningfully better at full-truck volumes.

How long from order confirmation to delivery in Durgapur?

For standard packing-grade thicknesses we ship within 3-5 working days from advance confirmation, plus 6-8 days transit. Custom-cut sizes or Okoume-faced runs add a few days.

Are your rates inclusive of GST and freight?

The ex-factory rates published above are exclusive. GST (12% on plywood) and freight to Durgapur are quoted line-wise on the proforma invoice. Freight depends on diesel and return-load availability on the lane.

Can you supply ISPM-15 compliant crates for export consignments?

Yes. For consignments routing overseas through Haldia or Kolkata, crate timber can be heat-treated and IPPC-marked to ISPM-15 so the packaging clears phytosanitary inspection at destination.
