Why the core matters more than the face

When buyers compare plywood, they usually look at the face veneer — okoume, gurjan, a clean paintable surface. The face is mostly cosmetic. The core is the stack of inner veneers that makes up most of the panel's thickness, and it is the core that decides how the sheet actually performs. Weight, screw and nail holding, stiffness and strength all come from the core species, not the face. Two sheets with the same okoume face can behave completely differently depending on what is underneath. So when you specify plywood, specify the core.

Hardwood core (mixed tropical hardwood / gurjan)

A hardwood core is the densest of the common options. It gives the best screw-holding and the highest strength, and it is the heaviest. This is the core you want where the panel has to carry load, take repeated fastening or survive rough handling — packing cases and crates for heavy goods, marine and structural panels, and heavy-duty work generally. The tradeoff is weight: a hardwood-core panel adds the most dead weight to a case or a piece of furniture.

Eucalyptus core

Eucalyptus is a plantation-grown hardwood. It offers good density and strength with consistent, renewable supply, which is why it has become a common modern core. It sits between hardwood and poplar — it can approach hardwood on strength and screw-hold depending on species and grade, but is more uniform and more sustainably sourced. Poplar core

Poplar is botanically a hardwood, but a light, low-density one. It holds screws less well and is less strong than hardwood or eucalyptus, but it is flat, stable and noticeably lighter. Choose poplar where weight is the priority and the panel does not carry much load — light furniture, craft and display work, and some interior applications. It is the wrong core for heavy crating or anything that must hold a fastener under stress.

How to choose a core for your job

  • Crating heavy or engineering goods? Specify a hardwood core for maximum strength and screw-hold.
  • Building furniture or interior panels? A eucalyptus core gives a consistent, renewable, well-balanced panel.
  • Weight is the main constraint and load is light? A poplar core keeps the panel light and flat.
  • Marine use? Stay with a hardwood core, and confirm the grade and bonding to the IS 710 / BWP marine specification. For structural work, match the grade and bonding to your application's own specification rather than the marine standard.
