Plywood cable drum specifications — grades, sizes and ISPM-15
Short answer: plywood cable drums use commercial-grade (BWR or BWP) plywood flanges and a solid-wood barrel, built to the cable manufacturer's bill of materials (drum diameter, flange thickness, barrel width, take-up capacity). The solid-wood components must be ISPM-15 heat-treated for export; the plywood flanges are generally exempt. We build to your BoM and quote FOB Cochin.
How a plywood cable drum is constructed
A wooden cable drum has three main components:
- Flanges — the two round side discs. Built up from multiple layers of commercial plywood (typically BWR, IS 303) bonded and cut to the required diameter. Plywood flanges are lighter and more consistent than sawn-timber flanges.
- Barrel (drum body) — the cylinder the cable winds onto. Usually built from hardwood or rubberwood staves, or a combination of plywood and solid wood, depending on diameter and cable weight.
- Cheeks / internal supports — cross-members that brace the flanges and carry the barrel spindle. Solid hardwood.
The result is a drum that carries the cable load, survives the reeling and unreeling cycle, and protects the cable in transit and storage.

Flange thickness depends on drum diameter and cable weight — typically 18–25 mm for medium to large drums; lighter drums may use 12–16 mm. We confirm all thickness and layup specifications at quotation.
ISPM-15 and cable drums
For export, the solid-wood barrel, staves and internal supports must be heat-treated and ISPM-15 stamped. The plywood flanges are generally exempt from ISPM-15 (because the plywood manufacturing process eliminates pests). We supply finished drums already ISPM-15 compliant. - Barrel width (distance between flanges — determines how much cable fits)
- Take-up capacity (cable weight / length) or the cable specification
