Packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets for Asansol's coal and steel belt

We manufacture the packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets that move heavy machinery, mining gear and finished steel out of the Asansol-Durgapur corridor. Our group has manufactured in Perumbavoor since 1986, and we ship full-truck loads up the Kochi-to-Bengal lane. Okoume face veneer is available where the consignment has to present well overseas.

The industrial picture

One of eastern India's densest heavy-industry corridors

Asansol sits at the heart of a coal-and-steel belt: the Raniganj coalfield, the integrated steel works at Burnpur, and the long backbone of NH-19 and NH-2 carrying coking coal, HR coils, mining electricals and pump skids. Every one of those movements needs wood — packing-grade plywood for export crates, hardwood pallets for forklift handling, runners and gluts for heavy castings, and container-floor-grade ply for stuffed export consignments leaving via Kolkata, Haldia and Paradip. Asansol-Durgapur is treated as a single metropolitan industrial region under the Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA), and the wood-packaging demand is best read belt by belt.

Coal and mining: the Raniganj coalfield

The Raniganj basin around Sanctoria and Dishergarh is one of the oldest mined coal basins in the country. The downstream packaging demand here is rarely about coal itself; it is about capital equipment going into the mines — longwall shearers, conveyor belt drums, switchgear, transformer panels, hydraulic roof supports, pumps, motors and spare-part shipments inbound from equipment makers. All of these move in heavy plywood crates on certified pallets.

Steel: the Burnpur works and the auxiliary belt

The integrated steel plant at Burnpur is the anchor facility, modernised to roughly 2.5 MTPA of crude steel. Around it sits a dense ring of rolling mills, foundries, refractory plants and steel-fabrication units across the Burnpur-Kulti-Hirapur axis. Demand here is for heavy-load crates around mill rolls, gear boxes, refractory blocks, and finished steel parcels being skidded for road movement. Pallets and runners tend to be 19 mm and thicker, with sawn hardwood gluts to take the point loads off the ply.

Engineering, cement and railways

The Durgapur side of the corridor adds an alloy-steel plant, mining-machinery makers and a heavy-electricals unit, along with several private engineering shops; the cement clusters around Chittaranjan and Salanpur add bagged-cargo and machinery packing demand. ADDA's Mangalpur and Bamunara industrial estates round out the SME base. A major locomotive works near Asansol ships spares and sub-assemblies in heavy ply crates, and export-oriented consignments route through the Kolkata and Haldia dock systems for break-bulk or container stuffing — which is where container-floor-grade and BWR ply come in.

What we ship

The SKUs that move in this corridor

The product mix that lands well in the Asansol belt is narrower than our full range. These are the lines that move.

Packing-grade plywood (commercial / rubberwood core)

The bread-and-butter SKU for crate makers. Standard 8 ft x 4 ft sheets, IS 303 MR-bonded, in the thicknesses below. Selling rates are ex-Perumbavoor factory; GST and transport are extra and quoted on the truck size.

ThicknessTypical useIndicative ₹/sq.ft (ex-factory)
6 mmLight export cartons, panel separators24.0
8 mmLight crates, side panels28.0
10 mmMedium crates, internal partitions31.5
12 mmGeneral packing-case standard33.5
15 mm / 16 mmHeavy crates, machinery bases39.0 / 39.5
18 mmHeavy export, container flooring, base boards42.0

Okoume-faced packing plywood

Where the consignment is high-value or the receiver is overseas — typically OEM machinery, export-grade castings or anything that has to look the part inside an air-freight crate — we offer Okoume face veneer on the same MR-Packing or BWR core. It machines cleanly, nails without splitting and presents better at customs inspection. Quoted on request.

Hardwood pallets and runners

Standard sizes we build to: 1200 x 1000 mm and 1200 x 800 mm, two-way and four-way entry. Heavier 1219 x 1016 mm (48 in x 40 in) GMA-style pallets for North American export consignments. Jackwood and rubberwood runners are supplied at ₹400/cft (jackwood) and as-per-size (rubberwood); the standard tolerance reads as ¼ inch minus on jackwood.

Container flooring and shuttering ply

For stuffed export containers we supply 18 mm BWR-grade ply suited for floor lining. For the construction side — slab work at the cement, power and infra projects in the corridor — film-faced shuttering plywood is available in standard sheet sizes.

Logistics

Kochi to Asansol: the lane economics

Asansol is roughly 2,000 km by road from Kochi. That is not a short trip, but for repeating bulk orders the trucking lane is well-established and predictable.

  • Road, full-truck: 32-ft single-axle or multi-axle from Perumbavoor / Kochi, routed via Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Raipur and into West Bengal — transit typically 7 to 9 days door-to-door, depending on the trailer type and the season.
  • Coastal + road: for very large volumes we can break the trip — sea leg from Cochin Port (Vallarpadam / ICTT) up to Haldia or Kolkata, then short-haul road into Asansol (around 230 km from Kolkata). This usually only pencils out above 2–3 container-equivalents per consignment.
  • Rail container: container trains from south India terminals to ICDs in the east are available; lane economics shift quarterly, so we price each load individually.

Volume-wise, a single 32-ft trailer carries roughly 1,000–1,200 sheets of 12 mm packing ply depending on the stacking plan. Truck-load economics are the single biggest variable in the landed price into Asansol, which is why we quote ex-factory and transport separately rather than bury it in the sheet rate. Where the order is export-bound, ISPM-15 heat-treated and stamped pallets and crates are supplied with the IPPC mark and the certificate alongside the consignment.

Choosing a grade

Which grade for which load

  1. Inland packing, single-trip crates inside India: MR-bonded packing-grade ply, 12 mm sides, 18 mm base. Lowest landed cost per crate.
  2. Export crates, OEM machinery, sea voyage: step up to a BWR core, Okoume face on the visible surfaces, 18 mm base with hardwood gluts under heavy point loads.
  3. Container floor lining and dunnage: 18 mm BWR. A single sheet across the container width where possible, to avoid joints under wheel loads.
  4. Mining / heavy electrical equipment crates: 15 to 18 mm sides, hardwood corner posts, base sized for the lifting-tackle profile rather than the cargo footprint.
  5. Construction slab work in the Asansol-Durgapur corridor: film-faced shuttering ply, not packing-grade. The two are not interchangeable.

FAQ

Common questions from Asansol buyers

Is it worth buying plywood from Kerala when sources in Yamunanagar or Kolkata are closer?

For one-off small orders, no. For repeating bulk packing-grade demand — say a full truck a month or more — our mill rates plus the trucking lane are competitive on landed cost, and the consistency of the core construction tends to be tighter because of how we specify and run our manufacturing.

Do you supply ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets for export?

Yes. ISPM-15 compliant heat-treated and stamped pallets and crates are available; we quote the IPPC stamp and the certificate together with the order.

What is the minimum order size you ship into West Bengal?

The economics work cleanly from a full 32-ft trailer upward. We can consolidate smaller part-loads where another consignment is already routed in the same direction, but the per-sheet rate moves up accordingly.

Send the specs, get a workable number

If you run a packing operation, an export crate workshop, a pallet line, or an EPC project in the Asansol-Durgapur belt, the cleanest way to get a workable number is to send us the thickness, sheet size, monthly quantity and delivery pin code. We come back with an ex-factory rate, an indicative trucking cost on the Kochi-Asansol lane, and a sample of the relevant grade if you need to test it before placing the first order. Forty years of group manufacturing since 1986 sit behind every sheet that leaves Perumbavoor, and we are happy to be measured on the load that actually arrives in Asansol.
