Packing-grade and Okoume plywood, crates and pallets for Durgapur's steel and machinery belt
We manufacture the packing-grade plywood, hardwood runners and built-to-drawing crates that protect coils, plates and heavy machinery leaving Durgapur. Produced in Perumbavoor, where our group has run plywood operations since 1986, and railed up the eastern lane in full-truck loads.
The industrial picture
Durgapur runs on heavy metal
Durgapur is a planned steel township in Paschim Bardhaman district, about 175 km north-west of Kolkata along NH-19, and the second-largest urban-industrial centre in West Bengal after Kolkata. The integrated steel plant rolls coils and plates that have to leave the city in protective wooden cases. Mining and allied machinery makers, plus a cluster of foundries, forging units and alloy-steel re-rollers, ship finished goods that must survive a 1,500 to 2,500 km road or rail journey before they reach the end customer. Every one of those movements creates a plywood requirement: packing-grade panels for case sides, hardwood runners for skids, and container flooring for export consolidation.
For a plywood manufacturer the city is attractive because the bulk demand is concentrated rather than scattered. A handful of estates absorb most of the wooden-packaging tonnage.
Estates and belts to know
- The integrated steel-plant township and approach roads — coil packing, plate-banding skids and ancillary structural shipments.
- The heavy mining-machinery industrial belt — draglines, conveyor parts and large machinery that ship in custom-built crates with thick base boards.
- The state power-equipment and fabrication area — fabrication shops and power-equipment ancillaries.
- WBIIDC industrial estates: Bidhannagar (Durgapur), Bamunara, Rajbandh, Muchipara, Gopalpur — secondary engineering, alloy-steel re-rollers, refractories and a growing cluster of light-engineering units that crate finished goods for dispatch.
- Sponge-iron and ferro-alloy clusters around Raniganj–Andal–Pandaveswar — adjacent to Durgapur and pulling from the same packing supply chain.
The common thread is heavy goods that need wooden packaging built to handle weight and abrasion, not consumer-grade boxes. That is exactly the slot packing-grade plywood is designed for.
What we ship
Three product lines pull most of the Durgapur volume
We manufacture through our own facilities in Perumbavoor to consistent specifications, which is how grade and thickness tolerance stay even across pan-India dispatches. For Durgapur, three lines carry the weight, with an Okoume face available as an option on top.
Packing-grade plywood (commercial / rubberwood face)
Used for case sides, lids, base panels and partition boards inside steel-coil and machinery crates. Standard sheet size is 8 ft x 4 ft (2440 x 1220 mm). Indicative thickness range and ex-factory rates (GST and freight extra):
| Thickness | Typical use | Ex-factory rate (Rs/sq.ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | Light partitions, separators | 24 |
| 8 mm | Inner liners | 28 |
| 10 mm | Side panels, light cases | 31.5 |
| 12 mm | Standard case sides and lids | 33.5 |
| 15-16 mm | Heavier crate panels | 39 - 39.5 |
| 18 mm | Base boards, machinery crates | 42 |
For steel-coil packing the typical pull is 12 mm and 15 mm in volume, with 18 mm reserved for base boards under heavy coils.
Sawn timber runners and skids
Plywood panels are only half the crate. The structural skeleton — runners, headers, base skids — is sawn hardwood. We supply jackwood at Rs 400 per cft (quarter-inch minus tolerance) and rubberwood runners as per the sizes the customer's design calls for. Most Durgapur crate makers cut their own runners from sized stock, so we ship in standard scantling.
Container flooring and export crates
Exporters routing through Kolkata and Haldia for shipments out of eastern India often need 18 mm panels at the boiling-water-resistant grade for container flooring or for crates that will see a sea voyage. Where the box has to last six weeks in marine humidity, we recommend stepping up to BWR rather than running standard packing ply.
Okoume-faced premium packing
Okoume is a face-veneer option layered onto the packing or BWR core, not a separate grade. It is the right choice when the consignee is overseas, when crate aesthetics matter (display goods, precision instruments) or when the surface needs to be smoother and brand-printable. Quoted separately on request.
Logistics
Kochi to Durgapur — the lane reality
The road distance from Kochi to Durgapur is approximately 2,050 km. The practical route runs Kochi → Bengaluru → Hyderabad → Vijayawada → Visakhapatnam → Bhubaneswar → Kharagpur → Durgapur, mostly on NH-44, NH-16 and NH-19. We dispatch in full-truck loads: a single 32-ft multi-axle trailer carries roughly 24-26 tonnes of sheet stock, and a full load works out cheaper per sq.ft than part-load once you cross about 800 sheets of 12 mm.
- Transit time: typically 6-8 days door-to-door by road, depending on the season and Odisha-coast weather.
- Rail option: for very large standing orders, parcel-rake or container-rake economics start to make sense, but most Durgapur buyers stay on road for flexibility.
- Port routing: for export-bound buyers we can ship FOB Cochin or DDU Haldia/Kolkata when the end customer is overseas, useful for heavy-machinery exporters crating for sea freight.
- Export packing: where the consignment leaves India, the crate timber can be supplied ISPM-15 compliant (heat-treated and IPPC-marked) so it clears phytosanitary inspection at the destination.
Choosing a grade
Which grade for which load?
Use packing-grade (commercial / rubberwood-faced) when:
- The crate will be opened at the destination within 4-6 weeks.
- The freight is road or short-haul rail within India.
- Cost-per-sheet matters and the load is well under the panel's structural limit.
Use BWR / boiling-water-resistant when:
- The crate sees humid storage, monsoon transit or a sea leg.
- The end use is container flooring or marine-export packing, where an IS 710 BWP-grade panel is the right specification.
Use shuttering ply when:
- The need is concrete formwork for plant expansion, not packing — common for projects inside the steel-plant and power-equipment complexes.
Add an Okoume face when:
- The crate carries premium or branded goods.
- The buyer specifies a smoother surface or better screw-holding for repeated assembly.
FAQ
Durgapur supply questions
What is the minimum order quantity you ship to Durgapur?
Most Durgapur dispatches are full-truck loads, and mixed thickness on one truck is fine. For trial orders we can co-load with another West Bengal destination, but the freight per sq.ft is meaningfully better at full-truck volumes.
How long from order confirmation to delivery in Durgapur?
For standard packing-grade thicknesses we ship within 3-5 working days from advance confirmation, plus 6-8 days transit. Custom-cut sizes or Okoume-faced runs add a few days.
Are your rates inclusive of GST and freight?
The ex-factory rates published above are exclusive. GST (12% on plywood) and freight to Durgapur are quoted line-wise on the proforma invoice. Freight depends on diesel and return-load availability on the lane.
Can you supply ISPM-15 compliant crates for export consignments?
Yes. For consignments routing overseas through Haldia or Kolkata, crate timber can be heat-treated and IPPC-marked to ISPM-15 so the packaging clears phytosanitary inspection at destination.
