What Cuttack makes, and how each sector buys plywood

Cuttack sits at an under-discussed industrial intersection in eastern India. The Mahanadi-Kathajodi twin-river city is the historic capital of Odisha, a serious handloom and textile cluster, the home of filigree silver craft, and the gateway to the Choudwar sponge-iron and ferro-alloy belt. Every one of those sectors generates outbound cargo that has to be packed into wooden crates, stacked on pallets or sat on a container floor before it leaves the state. To plan a supply lane you have to understand what the city actually ships, because each sector buys plywood differently.

Choudwar — sponge iron, ferro-alloys, steel

Choudwar Industrial Estate, about 12 km north of the city across the Mahanadi, is one of the original IDCO estates and the heart of the local metallurgical belt. Sponge-iron (DRI) plants, induction furnaces, ferro-chrome units and re-rolling mills cluster here, extending up toward the Jagatpur and Athagarh nodes. The cargo is heavy, high-density and abrasive: billets, ingots, ferro-alloy lumps, machined castings and spares. For these loads the packaging question is rarely about looks; it is whether the box and pallet will hold 800 kg without flexing.

Jagatpur, Madhupatna and the SME belt

Jagatpur Industrial Estate on the western fringe, plus Madhupatna and the older Khapuria cluster, host a long tail of engineering job-shops, auto-component units, transformer and switchgear assemblers, plastic moulders and food processors. This is classic export-crate territory: mixed SKUs, moderate weights and frequent shipments routed through Paradip or Kolkata.

Textiles and handloom

Odisha's handloom and textile export footprint runs from Bargarh and Sambalpur through Cuttack, where weaver co-operatives, state handloom hubs and private exporters consolidate stock. Textile cargo is lighter but volumetric; it travels in marine-grade plywood crates with internal partitions and moisture protection.

Filigree and high-value handicrafts

Cuttack's filigree silver, brassware and stone-craft exporters move low-volume, very high-value consignments. Air freight is common, and the crates have to be precision-fit with foam inserts. The plywood spec here is about face quality and dimensional accuracy, not raw strength.

Packing-grade plywood — the workhorse

Our commercial rubberwood packing-grade plywood is the default for sponge-iron, ferro-alloy and engineering crates. Standard sheet sizes are 8x4 ft and 7x4 ft, with thicknesses from 6 mm through 18 mm. Indicative selling rates (ex-factory; GST and transport extra):

Okoume face veneer — for handicraft and high-spec exports

Okoume is a face-veneer option on our packing and BWR grades, not a separate grade on its own. It gives a clean, light, tight-pored surface that handicraft and silver exporters in Cuttack like for presentation crates and stencilled boxes that have to look as good as they perform. Okoume-faced sheets are quoted on request, because the price moves with veneer availability.

Pallets and container flooring

For Choudwar's metallurgical loads and Paradip-bound textile consignments, the standard pallet decks we cut are 1200x1000 mm and 1100x1100 mm, generally an 18 mm deck on a hardwood block-and-runner frame. Where customers run their own pallet shop, we supply the deck sheets in bulk and let them assemble. For 20-ft and 40-ft container floor repairs and heavy-cargo stuffing, 18 mm BWR packing ply in 8x4 ft is the workhorse.

Sawn timber for crate frames

We also dispatch jackwood and rubberwood runners alongside the plywood. Jackwood at Rs 400/cft (quarter-inch minus tolerance) is the usual frame for heavier crates; rubberwood runners are quoted to size.

Kochi to Cuttack — the two lanes

Cuttack is roughly 1,700 km from our Perumbavoor dispatch yard by road. Two practical lanes exist.

Road-direct transit depends on weighbridge and check-post conditions. For most Cuttack buyers placing a first order, the road-direct lane wins on simplicity. Once monthly volume crosses a couple of truckloads, the coastal route starts paying back by avoiding the inland fuel and toll burn. On the certification question: an ISPM-15 stamp belongs on the finished crate from a registered fumigator, not on the raw plywood. We supply panels and runners to spec; the heat-treatment certification is done at the crate workshop, and our hardwood ply already meets the moisture and species norms most Cuttack exporters need.

Choosing a grade

Which grade for which Cuttack load

• Sponge-iron, ferro-alloy and billet crates (Choudwar): 12 mm or 15 mm commercial packing ply on a jackwood runner frame. Skip Okoume — the load never sees it.
• Engineering, auto-component and transformer exports (Jagatpur): 12 mm packing-ply panels, 18 mm base. BWR upgrade if the route crosses monsoon transit.
• Textile and handloom exports: 6 mm or 8 mm packing ply with an internal moisture-barrier liner. A cost-sensitive segment — don't over-spec.
• Filigree, brass and stone handicrafts: Okoume-faced packing ply, 8–10 mm, with precision foam inserts. Presentation matters as much as strength.
• Pallet decks and container flooring: 18 mm BWR packing ply, 8x4 ft.
• Shuttering ply is the right call only when the buyer is on a Cuttack construction site (bridge work, township builds, IDCO infrastructure). It is not a packing material, so please don't use it as one.
