Packing-grade plywood, export crates and pallets for Rourkela's steel and aerospace MRO sectors
We manufacture packing-grade plywood, Okoume-faced ply, crates and pallets in Perumbavoor, where our group has run plywood operations since 1986. From our Kochi base we supply the Rourkela belt across steel-mill packing, aerospace MRO crating and IDCO-estate fabrication. We ship to drawing and combine ply, runners and pallet stock into single loads up the Kochi-to-Odisha lane.
The industrial picture
Rourkela: a steel city with an aerospace ambition
Rourkela sits in an unusual spot on the industrial map. A steel city by birth, an aerospace MRO city by recent ambition, and a hub for downstream fabrication that stretches across the Sundargarh belt. For anyone packing finished goods out of Rourkela, the question is rarely whether they need plywood. The question is which thickness, which face, and how fast it can land on the factory floor.
The city is anchored by a large integrated steel plant, one of the original mills set up under the first wave of public-sector industrialisation. It feeds plate, coil, structurals and pig iron into downstream users across eastern India, and an enormous share of the city's logistics activity grows out of that single complex. Around it, an entire ecosystem of fabricators, gas suppliers, refractory makers and engineering job-shops occupies the Kalunga Industrial Estate and the adjacent IDCO sheds on the Rourkela-Sundargarh corridor.
The second axis is aerospace. An aerospace MRO facility at Rourkela handles overhaul work for fighter airframes and brings with it a defence-grade packaging requirement that is materially different from steel-mill packing. Sub-assemblies, line-replaceable units, instrumentation and engine components need crates that survive multi-modal handling and meet stricter timber-treatment specifications.
Around these two anchors sit the smaller but persistent sectors: ferro-alloy units in the broader Sundargarh-Sambalpur belt, downstream sponge-iron plants, transformer and switchgear assemblers, and a growing set of engineering exporters who ship through Paradip and Visakhapatnam ports. Every one of those flows generates demand for plywood — as raw sheet, as crate kits, as pallets, or as container-flooring repair stock.
What this means for plywood demand
Steel packing tends to be heavy, low-aesthetic and repetitive. Aerospace and defence packing is lower volume, higher specification, with audit trails. Export-bound engineering goods sit in between. Our range is built to serve all three, but the grade decision matters, which we cover below.
What we ship
What we manufacture for the Rourkela belt
Packing-grade plywood (commercial / rubberwood core)
This is the volume product for the Rourkela belt. Hardwood-faced plywood, MR-bonded, manufactured to packing-case specifications rather than furniture cosmetics. Used by case-makers building crates for steel plates, machined components, transformer accessories and general engineering exports. Standard sheet size is 8 ft x 4 ft; bespoke cuts are arranged where the crate bill-of-materials needs it.
| Thickness | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 6 mm, 8 mm | Crate sheathing, light box panels, partitions |
| 10 mm, 12 mm | General engineering and component crates |
| 14 mm, 15 mm, 16 mm | Heavier crate walls, steel-output packing |
| 18 mm | Crate bases, skid decking, container-flooring substitute |
Okoume-faced packing plywood
Where the crate is going to a European or Japanese consignee, or where the goods inside are high-value — aerospace spares, calibrated instruments, machined dies — Okoume face veneer is the option to ask about. It is a face-veneer specification on the MR-Packing or BWR core, not a separate grade family. The reason buyers pay the premium: a cleaner face that takes stencils and crate marks legibly, tighter glue lines and fewer overlaps.
Shuttering plywood
Rourkela's construction load — new shed expansions inside the steel township, IDCO industrial sheds, aerospace MRO infrastructure work, and the routine civil contracts around the steel plant — keeps shuttering ply in demand. 12 mm and 18 mm film-faced ply are the common pulls, sold by the sheet for formwork contractors.
Sawn timber, runners and pallet stock
Jackwood hardwood runners (¼ inch minus tolerance) ship out of Kochi by the cubic foot for case-makers who build their own pallets and crate skids. Rubberwood runners are offered to size. Standard pallet footprints for the Rourkela lane are 1200 x 1000 mm and 1200 x 800 mm (Euro), but most steel-plant pallet orders are bespoke to the load.
Container-flooring stock
Container-repair workshops along the eastern corridor pull 28 mm container-flooring grade from time to time. We supply it on indent where the volume and specification justify the lead time; for one-off repairs, a packing-grade 18 mm sheet often does the job at lower cost.
Logistics
The Kochi-to-Rourkela lane
The straight road distance from Kochi to Rourkela is roughly 1,900 km. The practical trucking route runs Kochi → Salem → Bengaluru → Hyderabad → Vijayawada → Visakhapatnam → Bhubaneswar → Rourkela, or alternatively up the central spine through Hubli, Sholapur, Nagpur and Raipur. Transit for a full truckload is typically 5–7 days depending on the season, the operator and the number of axles.
| Mode | Typical transit | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Full truckload (FTL), 32 ft single axle | 5–7 days | Single buyer, 600–800 sheets, predictable delivery slot |
| FTL, 32 ft multi-axle / 40 ft | 5–7 days | Mixed loads of plywood + runners + pallet stock |
| Part-load (LTL) via Hyderabad hub | 7–10 days | 50–200 sheets, smaller fabricators |
| Coastal via Vizag port (rare) | 10–14 days | Very large indent loads where road economics break down |
All prices are quoted ex-factory Kochi; transport and GST are billed extra. For Rourkela, we routinely combine packing ply, runners and pallet stock into a single FTL so the buyer absorbs the freight across more material, bringing the landed cost per sq.ft down meaningfully. Our plywood is engineered wood and generally exempt from ISPM-15; where the consignee requires HT-stamped solid-wood components, we coordinate treatment so the finished crate is compliant.
Choosing a grade
Which grade for which Rourkela load
Use packing-grade plywood when
- The crate is for steel-mill output, fabricated components or general engineering exports inside India or to the GCC.
- Cost-per-sheet is the dominant decision.
- The consignee does not specify a face veneer.
Use Okoume-faced packing plywood when
- The crate is going to Europe, Japan, the US or any consignee with stencil-legibility expectations.
- The goods inside are high-value or audit-tracked — aerospace LRUs, calibration equipment, dies and moulds.
- You need cleaner ISPM-15 mark visibility on the crate face.
Use shuttering plywood when
- The use is formwork — civil contracts inside the steel township, IDCO sheds, or aerospace MRO infrastructure work.
- Multi-pour reuse is expected and a film-faced surface is needed.
Use sawn timber / runners when
- You are building the crate skid or pallet base yourself.
- The load is heavy and a hardwood runner is required for fork-truck handling.
FAQ
Rourkela supply questions
How much lead time do you need for a Rourkela order?
For regular packing-grade thicknesses, 3–5 days to dispatch from Kochi once the proforma invoice is settled. Add 5–7 days transit. For Okoume-faced or non-standard thicknesses, plan on 7–10 days to dispatch.
Do you handle ISPM-15 heat treatment?
The plywood we ship is engineered wood and generally exempt from ISPM-15. Where the consignee requires HT-stamped solid-wood components (runners, skids), we coordinate with treatment facilities so the final crate is compliant.
Can you supply cut-to-size for crate kits?
Yes, on indent. For Rourkela case-makers running standardised crate sizes, we cut sheets to the crate bill-of-materials before dispatch, which reduces on-site waste and saves labour at the fabrication shed.
