Coal, thermal, granite and irrigation, all running side by side

Khammam sits in a stretch of Telangana where coal, thermal generation, granite and irrigation projects all run together. That mix produces a steady demand for industrial packing: heavy power-equipment crates, pallet pools for spare parts moving to the regional collieries and thermal sites, and container flooring for granite blocks and processed agri loads heading toward the eastern ports. Khammam is a lane we serve regularly.

The district is anchored by the surrounding coal belt. Yellandu, Kothagudem, Manuguru and Sathupalli are all within an hour or two of Khammam town, and the coal that leaves these mines feeds thermal stations across South India. Around that coal core, several other industries are active:

• Coal handling and washery equipment — conveyor sections, crusher housings, screen decks and electrical control panels move in and out of the colliery projects almost weekly. These are exactly the irregular, point-loaded items that need purpose-built plywood crates rather than off-the-shelf cartons.
• Thermal power EPC supply chain — the regional thermal stations and the broader state generation footprint pull in turbine spares, transformer components, valves and instrumentation packed for cross-state transit.
• Granite and dimensional stone — the Khammam–Paloncha–Madhira granite quarries ship blocks and cut slabs in containers, and container floors take real punishment under those loads.
• Agri processing — chilli, cotton, mango and rice from the Khammam belt move on pallets to wholesale markets and exporters, and the pallet pool turns over fast.
• General engineering around Khammam, Sathupalli and the IDA estates — fabrication shops, motor rewinders and pump assemblers that need crates only when an order ships outside Telangana.

Each of those sectors has a different packaging brief, but they all run on the same family of inputs: BWR or MR-grade plywood at the right thickness, sawn battens for framing, and either nailed-and-strapped crates or heat-treated crates when the load is leaving the country.

The product range that moves on a Kochi–Khammam truck

The list below covers what actually moves on a Kochi–Khammam truck. We can quote on partial truck loads when a buyer is testing a spec, but the freight economics favour full 9-tonne or 16-tonne consignments.

Packing-grade plywood

Our packing range is BWR-bonded hardwood plywood we manufacture to CWI specifications at our facilities in Perumbavoor. Standard panel size is 8x4 ft. Okoume is available as a face-veneer option on the packing and BWR grades for high-value or freight-sensitive exports. The thicknesses we move most into Telangana for packaging work are:

For Khammam buyers handling coal-handling equipment or transformer parts, 12 mm walls with an 18 mm base on a hardwood batten frame is the workhorse construction. The plywood is moisture-resistant enough to survive monsoon-season transit between Kerala, Karnataka and Telangana without delamination at the corners.

Crates, including ISPM-15

For export crates — which matters for granite, engineering goods and any cargo moving to GCC, Vietnam or Europe — we supply ISPM-15 compliant heat-treated crates with the IPPC stamp. Domestic crates for inter-state movement inside India do not need ISPM-15, but many Khammam exporters keep both specs running because the same workshop builds them on the same jigs.

Pallets

Two-way and four-way pallets in 1200x1000 mm and 1200x800 mm (Euro size) are the most common requests. For Khammam's agri loads we also build heavier 1200x1200 mm pallets in jackwood or rubberwood runners with plywood deck boards.

Container flooring

For granite block consolidators and heavy machinery shippers, 18 mm BWR plywood used as container floor reinforcement saves the actual container floor from gouging and stops point-loads from punching through. We supply it in pre-cut strips or full sheets depending on how the loaders prefer to work.

Sawn timber and battens

Hardwood battens — jackwood at ¼-inch-minus tolerance, rubberwood at standard sizes — go out alongside the plywood so a Khammam crate workshop can finish in one purchase order instead of chasing two suppliers.

Logistics

Kochi to Khammam, the route economics

Khammam is approximately 1,200 km from Kochi by road. The standard trucking lane runs Kochi → Salem → Bengaluru → Anantapur → Kurnool → Hyderabad → Khammam, on NH 44 and NH 65. Transit time for a 16-tonne full-truck-load is typically 4 to 5 days door to door, depending on weighbridge queues at the Telangana–Andhra border and monsoon conditions on the Western Ghats stretch.

The rail option (Kochi via Vijayawada to Khammam) is cheaper per tonne on paper, but break-bulk handling and the absence of a clean direct goods-shed pairing make road transport more reliable for plywood and crate panels. Most of our Telangana customers stay on road.

For very large orders we can also rail-mode through Bengaluru and then road from there, which trims about a day off transit. Container-flooring sheets that are eventually loaded into a sea container at Krishnapatnam or Visakhapatnam can sometimes ride into the same container, worth discussing case by case during the quote.

Choosing a grade

Matching the grade to the Khammam load

Three of our grades cover almost every Khammam packaging brief. The decision rules below are how we coach buyers when they ask:

• BWR packing-grade hardwood plywood — default for almost every domestic and most export crates. Use it for coal-handling equipment, thermal-station spares, general engineering crates and pallet decks.
• Okoume-faced plywood — a premium, lighter-weight face-veneer option on the packing and BWR grades. Worth specifying when the crate itself adds meaningful freight cost, for high-value exports, or when the buyer wants a cleaner finished look on the panels. Common for engineering exports to GCC.
• Shuttering / film-faced plywood — not a packaging product as such, but Khammam's irrigation, infrastructure and EPC contractors use it for concrete formwork on bridges, canals and power-plant civil works. Available in 12 mm and 18 mm, film-faced both sides.

FAQ

Common questions from Khammam buyers

How long does delivery to Khammam typically take from Kochi?

Four to five days for a full-truck-load by road, assuming normal weighbridge times and no monsoon disruption on the Western Ghats. Part-loads piggyback on consolidator trucks and may run six to seven days.

Do you supply ISPM-15 certified crates for granite and engineering exports?

Yes. Heat-treated, IPPC-stamped crates are a standard product for us. For Khammam exporters this matters when cargo is heading to GCC, the EU or any country that enforces ISPM-15 at port of entry.

Can you ship to Khammam, Kothagudem, Sathupalli and the wider coal belt directly?

Yes, we deliver door-to-site across the district. Kothagudem and Sathupalli usually add half a day of last-mile from the Khammam unloading point, which is factored into the freight quote.
