Packing-grade plywood, crates, pallets and container flooring for Kuwait City's export and oilfield trade
We manufacture the packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets that Kuwait City's port workshops and oilfield packers build with. Our group has milled packing timber in Perumbavoor since 1986, and a steady share of that output now moves down the short Cochin to Shuwaikh lane.
The industrial picture
Why Kuwait City's industrial belt pulls packing plywood
Kuwait City sits at the head of the Persian Gulf, and almost everything moving in or out of the country either lands at Shuwaikh Port or transits the workshops that ring the capital. For a Kerala plywood manufacturer that means a steady, predictable pull for one product class: packing-grade plywood and timber finished into export-ready crates, skids, pallets and container flooring. Demand here is driven less by furniture and joinery than by export-packing, oilfield service workshops and re-export trade, concentrated in a tight crescent around the port.
Shuwaikh Industrial Area
Shuwaikh is the city's largest industrial zone, directly behind Shuwaikh Port. It mixes heavy workshops, automotive trade, building-material yards, packaging contractors and freight forwarders. This is where most of the packing-case work for outbound shipments is actually built. Plywood here is consumed by crate-makers framing oilfield spares, electrical panels, generators, valves and palletised general cargo for re-export.
Shuaiba and Mina Abdullah
South of the capital, the Shuaiba Industrial Area and the Mina Abdullah refining belt drive much of the upstream demand. The national oil-and-gas sector and its operating arms run a long tail of EPC contractors, valve and rotating-equipment vendors, and inspection-service firms that need compliant crates for tools, instrumentation and spares. Even where the crate is built in Shuwaikh, the spec sheet typically originates from these refining and upstream sectors.
Sabhan, Ardiya and Al Rai
Sabhan and Ardiya carry the lighter industrial work: SME manufacturing, electrical contracting, HVAC fabrication and a large volume of small-format crating. Al Rai concentrates on building materials and wholesale trade. Plywood demand here skews toward standard pallet sizes and lighter crate-grade ply rather than heavy machinery packing.
Shuwaikh Free Trade Zone
The free zone behind Shuwaikh Port is a re-export hub. Cargo lands, gets repacked or consolidated, and moves out again to Iraq, the wider GCC or East Africa. Repacking work is a steady consumer of plywood sheets, runners and pre-built pallets.
What we ship
Four product lines that do most of the work
Packing-grade plywood (MR-Packing)
Our core export to Kuwait. Hardwood-core, multi-ply, MR (moisture-resistant) bonded, built for crate sides, tops, bases and skid decking. Standard sizing for Kuwait shipments:
| Thickness | Typical use in Kuwait City | Standard size |
|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | Light crate panels, partitions, dunnage | 8×4 ft |
| 9 mm | Spares packing, general-cargo crates | 8×4 ft |
| 12 mm | Standard crate sides for oilfield and engineering spares | 8×4 ft |
| 15 mm – 18 mm | Heavy crate bases, skid decks, container flooring repair | 8×4 ft |
For ISPM-15 compliance, the surrounding crate framework uses heat-treated sawn timber; the plywood panels themselves are exempt under ISPM-15 because they are an engineered wood product.
Okoume face plywood
Okoume is a face-veneer option on our MR-Packing and BWR boards, not a separate grade. It gives a cleaner, lighter, more uniform face, useful in Kuwait when the crated equipment is high-value and the customer wants a presentable export package, or when the contents are sensitive to splinter and dust contamination such as instrumentation, lab equipment and medical devices. It is not the right call for rough oilfield spares where cost-per-sheet matters more than finish.
Shuttering plywood
For Kuwait City's construction pipeline, including commercial towers in the CBD, infrastructure work around the Jaber Causeway and the steady residential build-out toward Jahra, we manufacture film-faced shuttering plywood in 12 mm and 18 mm with phenolic film on both faces. Re-use cycles are the relevant spec, not just face appearance.
Pallets and container flooring
We make both four-way and two-way entry pallets. Standard sizes that move into Kuwait:
- 1200 × 1000 mm — GCC/EU common pool
- 1100 × 1100 mm — intra-Asia and container-optimised
- 1200 × 800 mm — Euro pallet, for clients shipping onward to Europe
Container flooring is supplied as 28 mm 7-ply hardwood panels for 20 ft / 40 ft container refurbishment, a recurring requirement in Shuwaikh's freight-forwarder and container-repair workshops.
Logistics
The Cochin to Kuwait City lane
The shipping lane is short by GCC standards, which is what keeps Kerala manufacturing price-competitive against South Asian and Far Eastern alternatives.
| Leg | Detail |
|---|---|
| Origin port | Cochin Port (Vallarpadam ICTT) or Tuticorin, depending on mainline service |
| Destination port | Shuwaikh Port, Kuwait City |
| Distance | ~1,800 nautical miles |
| Sea transit | 10 – 14 days door-to-port, route and transhipment dependent |
| Typical transhipment | Jebel Ali or Khor Fakkan for non-direct services |
| Container fit | ~520–560 sheets of 12 mm plywood per 20 ft FCL, depending on grade and packing |
For repeat buyers, monthly FCL programmes out of Cochin Port keep the lane predictable. For smaller volumes, LCL consolidation through Jebel Ali is the usual path. Documentation is straightforward: commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin (with Arab-Indian Chamber attestation where required), fumigation certificate where the crate timber is involved, and bill of lading.
Choosing a grade
Which board for which load
A practical short list for buyers in Kuwait City:
- Oilfield spares, valves, pumps, instrumentation → 12 mm MR-Packing on a 15–18 mm base; ISPM-15 sawn timber frame.
- Generator sets, transformers, large fabrications → 18 mm MR-Packing skid deck, 12 mm sides, jackwood runners.
- High-value or presentable export crates → Okoume-faced MR or BWR, 12 mm sides.
- Construction shuttering in the city's commercial pipeline → 12 mm or 18 mm phenolic-faced shuttering ply.
- Container refurbishment in Shuwaikh → 28 mm container flooring panels, apitong/keruing equivalent hardwood core.
- Re-export consolidation in the FTZ → standard 1200×1000 mm hardwood pallets plus 9 mm sheets for repack work.
FAQ
What Kuwait City buyers usually ask
Can you ship FCL direct from Cochin to Shuwaikh?
Yes. Direct and transhipment services both run out of Cochin Port. For mixed loads, we consolidate plywood, sawn timber, ready-built crates and pallets into the same FCL where the cube allows.
Do your boards meet IS:303 / IS:710?
Our MR-Packing grades conform to the IS:303 specification; BWR boards conform to IS:710. We can quote both grades and supply mill test certification on request.
How do you handle ISPM-15 for crates and pallets?
Plywood panels are ISPM-15 exempt as an engineered product. Sawn timber components such as runners, framework and skids are heat-treated at certified facilities and stamped to ISPM-15 before shipment.
