Packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets for Shuaiba's refining and petrochem belt

We manufacture the packing-grade plywood, heat-treated crates, pallets and container flooring that move equipment and packaged product across Kuwait's southern industrial coast. Our group has been making packing-grade plywood in Perumbavoor since 1986, and the Shuaiba lane fits the bulk, crate-ready work we do most days.

The industrial picture

Why Shuaiba's industrial belt matters to a Kochi plywood manufacturer

Shuaiba sits on Kuwait's southern coast, about 50 km below Kuwait City, and the cluster around Shuaiba Port plus the Shuaiba Industrial Area is one of the densest concentrations of refining, petrochemical and heavy-engineering activity in the northern Gulf. For a Kochi-based plywood manufacturer, what makes that belt interesting is not refining itself but everything bolted on to it: process equipment leaving the country for overhaul, catalyst drums, spare-part assemblies, valves and rotating equipment that travel cradled inside wooden crates, plus the constant pallet load that feeds petrochem warehouses.

Shuaiba Port

Shuaiba Port is Kuwait's main industrial and bulk-cargo gateway, sitting roughly 45 km south of Kuwait City. It handles general cargo, dry bulk, containers and project cargo for the refining and petrochem belt, and it is the closer port-of-call (versus Shuwaikh further north) for cargo destined to the Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi area.

Shuaiba Industrial Area (North and South)

The Shuaiba Industrial Area, split between a Northern and Southern zone, hosts petrochemicals, fertiliser plants, power and water desalination, cement, steel rerolling and a wide ring of supporting fabricators. The estate's tenants are heavy users of packed equipment imports and exports — anything that moves in or out of a process plant tends to travel inside plywood crates with steel banding.

Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah refineries

A short drive up the coast you have the Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah refineries, the largest in the country, plus the newer Al-Zour complex south of Shuaiba. The maintenance, turnaround and capital-project cycles at these refineries generate steady demand for export-grade wooden packing — pumps, heat-exchanger bundles, valves and instrumentation that ship out to overhaul shops and come back rebuilt.

The downstream petrochem cluster

A downstream petrochemicals cluster operates inside and adjacent to the Shuaiba belt, producing ethylene glycol, polyethylene and aromatics. The export side of that business is largely packaged — bagged on pallets, stacked, stretch-wrapped and loaded into containers — so pallet timber and pallet-grade plywood see continuous pull.

What we ship

What we ship to the Shuaiba lane

The product mix we move toward Shuaiba and the wider Al Ahmadi governorate is narrower than our domestic Indian mix, because the buyer here is almost always a packer, a fabricator or an EPC sub-vendor — not a furniture or interior trade. The four lines that dominate:

Packing-grade plywood (MR-Packing)

This is the workhorse. Hardwood-core packing-grade boards in 6, 8, 9, 12, 15 and 18 mm, 8x4 sheet format, used to skin export crates and to build internal partitions, supports and cradles. The board has to take nails along the edge without splitting, take steel strapping under tension, and hold up through monsoon-season ocean transit. We supply with a commercial face that's clean enough to stencil shipping marks directly onto the board.

Okoume-faced plywood

Where the box is going through multiple handovers, or where the buyer wants a lighter, finer-grained face, we offer Okoume face veneer on the packing or BWR core. Okoume is not a grade in itself — it is a face-veneer option layered on our standard packing and BWR constructions. It is a sensible spec for premium pharma, instrumentation and specialty-chemical exports where the crate is part of the product image.

Wooden crates and ISPM-15 boxes

For Shuaiba buyers who would rather receive a finished crate than build it themselves, we fabricate ISPM-15 heat-treated wooden boxes and skid-mounted crates to drawing — including reusable knock-down designs for repeat petrochem and refinery shipments.

Pallets and container flooring

Standard 1200x1000 and 1200x800 pallets in hardwood, plus heavier 4-way entry pallets sized for petrochem bag-loading. For 20-ft and 40-ft container conversions and tank-skid bases, we cut 18 mm and 21 mm hardwood plywood to container-floor dimensions.

Sawn hardwood and battens

Jackwood and rubberwood scantlings to runners, skids and corner-post sizes for buyers who fabricate crates in-house at their Shuaiba or Sabhan workshops.

Logistics

Kochi-to-Shuaiba logistics

The lane economics are friendly. Cochin Port (and the deeper-draft Vallarpadam ICTT) to Shuaiba Port is roughly 1,800 nautical miles, a typical ocean transit of 8 to 12 days direct, or 12 to 16 days on the more common feeder and transshipment routings via Jebel Ali, Khor Fakkan or Salalah. Kerala's plywood belt sits 30-40 km inland of Cochin Port, so the inland trucking leg from our Perumbavoor consolidation point to the container yard is short and cheap — a meaningful cost advantage compared to material sourced from north Indian or far-eastern origins.

What this means in practice

  • FCL bookings on the Cochin-Shuaiba lane are routine; a 20-ft container takes roughly 540-560 sheets of 12 mm 8x4 packing ply, depending on packing density.
  • FOB Cochin pricing is the cleanest starting point; we also quote CFR Shuaiba on request.
  • Documentation is straightforward — commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and, where the buyer requires it, fumigation and ISPM-15 certification for crates.

Choosing a grade

Choosing the right board for a Shuaiba shipment

Three rules-of-thumb we share with first-time buyers in the belt:

  1. Default to MR-Packing for general industrial export crates — refinery spares, structural steel components, valves, pumps. The cost-to-strength ratio is the best in our range.
  2. Specify an Okoume face when the box is part of brand presentation — pharma exports, instrumentation, premium chemical drums. A lighter face also reduces total crate weight on air-freight conversions.
  3. Move to shuttering ply (BWP/BWR) only if the end-use is concrete formwork at a Shuaiba construction project. For packing applications, our MR-Packing grade is already engineered for the load.

FAQ

Shuaiba buyers ask

Do you supply ISPM-15 certified crates from Kochi?

Yes. We heat-treat and stamp crates to ISPM-15 at our facilities in the Kochi-Perumbavoor belt and ship them either flat-packed (knock-down) or pre-assembled, depending on container fit.

What's the minimum order for a Shuaiba shipment?

One 20-ft FCL is the practical floor. Below that, LCL is possible but the per-sheet landed cost climbs quickly.

Can you cut sheets to non-standard sizes before loading?

Yes. We cut to buyer drawings in Perumbavoor before container stuffing — common for container-floor refurbishment work and for crate-kit pre-cuts.
