Packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets for Ludhiana's hosiery, bicycle and auto-component exporters
We manufacture the packing-grade plywood, export crates and pallets that move woollens, bicycle CKD kits and forgings out of Ludhiana. Built in Perumbavoor by a group operating since 1986, supplied on a planned-lane rate from Kochi to Punjab.
The industrial picture
Four export belts, four packing problems
Ludhiana is one of the most export-dense industrial cities in northern India, and the buyer profile for plywood-based packaging is not one homogeneous market. It splits across at least four belts, each with its own packing logic. Every flow ends the same way at the warehouse door: goods leave Ludhiana in a wooden crate, on a wooden pallet, or inside a container with a plywood floor that can take a forklift. That is where our operation fits in, even at a 2,400 km distance. Plywood is light per cubic foot, the truck lane from Kerala into Punjab is mature, and the volumes Ludhiana exporters move justify a planned-supply relationship rather than spot buys from the local mandi.
Focal Point (Phases I–VIII) — hosiery and woollens
Focal Point is the workhorse industrial estate of Ludhiana, running across multiple phases east and south-east of the city. The dominant tenants are hosiery manufacturers, woollen and knitwear units, and the dye-houses and finishing units that support them. Their export packing requirement is specific: light-weight crates and cartons that have to survive container stuffing at ICD Dhandari Kalan or Sahnewal and then a long sea leg through Mundra Port or JNPT. The wood content is usually a plywood lid and base with sawn-timber cleats, or full plywood crates for higher-value woollen garments and made-ups.
Industrial Area A, B and Gill Road — bicycle and bicycle parts
Ludhiana's bicycle cluster is internationally known. CKD (Completely Knocked Down) bicycle exports are the high-volume use case here — frames, forks, rims, hubs and components packed flat into multi-layer crates designed to fit a 20' or 40' container's internal dimensions exactly. This is one of the most plywood-intensive packaging segments in India: a single export order can pull hundreds of crates a week, and consistency of thickness and core quality matters because the crates get re-stacked five and six high during ocean transit.
GT Road and Doraha belt — auto components and forgings
Auto-component, forging and fastener units, especially toward Doraha and Khanna, ship dense, heavy goods. Their crates need thicker plywood walls, heavier sawn-timber framing and properly nailed bases. They also consume a meaningful volume of pallets — both standard 1200×800 mm Euro and 1200×1000 mm industrial sizes — to handle inbound steel and outbound finished parts on forklifts.
Sewing-machine, hand-tools and small machinery
Ludhiana still has a strong sewing-machine and hand-tools base. These units typically run smaller export crates with mid-range packing-grade plywood lids and bases, and consume sawn timber for cleats and edge protection.
What we ship
Packing-grade ply, crates, pallets and sawn timber
Our core line for a city like Ludhiana is packing-grade plywood — not the decorative product you would see in a furniture showroom, but a hardwood-core ply built specifically for crates, cases and pallets. Okoume is offered as a face-veneer option on the packing and BWR grades where lid appearance matters, not as a separate product. The everyday SKUs we move into Punjab look like this:
| Product | Typical thickness | Typical sheet | Where it gets used in Ludhiana |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial / Rubberwood packing-grade plywood | 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18 mm | 8'×4' | Hosiery & woollen export crates, bicycle CKD crate walls, light auto-component cases |
| Okoume-faced packing plywood (premium) | 9, 12, 15, 18 mm | 8'×4' | High-value woollen made-ups, branded bicycle exports where lid appearance matters |
| BWR / shuttering ply | 12, 18 mm | 8'×4' | Heavy auto-forging crates, reusable returnable crates, container flooring repair |
| Sawn timber (hardwood) | Cut-to-size cleats, runners | By cft | Crate framing, pallet stringers, edge protection |
Crate construction patterns
Three patterns cover most of what Ludhiana actually builds: open crates with a ply lid, ply base and sawn-timber sides (cheapest, used for non-fragile woollens and knitwear); closed plywood cases with 6–9 mm ply on all six faces over a hardwood frame (the bicycle CKD standard); and heavy nailed crates with 12–15 mm ply walls and 18 mm bases for forgings and machinery. We manufacture the plywood and sawn timber as raw inputs and can also build crates and pallets to your drawing; where local assembly is preferred, the cut happens at the packer or in-house at the exporter.
Pallets and container flooring
Pallet demand from Ludhiana is split between the auto-components belt (industrial sizes for forklift handling) and the hosiery belt (lighter pallets for warehouse stacking and stuffing). For container flooring — replacement plywood when an existing ISO container's floor has rotted or the operator wants to convert to a flush plywood floor — 18 mm BWR is the standard call.
Logistics
The Kochi-to-Ludhiana lane
The lane is mature and we plan around it rather than against it.
- Distance: roughly 2,400 km by road from Kochi/Ernakulam to Ludhiana.
- Mode: primarily 32-foot multi-axle trucks, full-truck-load. A standard 32-ft truck takes a useful 8'×4' plywood payload of meaningful volume depending on thickness mix — we plan the loading sheet thickness-by-thickness to maximise it.
- Transit: 6–8 days door-to-door is the realistic working window, longer in monsoon and during Punjab's harvest-season trucker shortage.
- Route: Kochi → Bengaluru/Salem belt → Maharashtra → MP → Rajasthan → Punjab. Toll, diesel and detention build the freight component.
- Order economics: for Ludhiana, full-truck loads make sense; LTL/part-loads from Kerala are slow and unreliable. We typically advise customers to consolidate a month's requirement into one or two trucks.
For one-way ocean legs out of Ludhiana, our packing-grade plywood and crate timber are produced to support ISPM-15 heat-treatment and fumigation where the exporter's destination requires a phytosanitary mark; we coordinate the treatment line with the order. All rates are quoted ex-factory; GST and transport extra — once destination, exact size mix and monthly quantity are confirmed, we build the proforma against an actual lane rate rather than a thumb-rule.
Choosing a grade
Which grade for which load
Use commercial / rubberwood packing-grade when…
The crate is one-way export, the goods are moderately fragile but not delicate (knitwear, woollens, hardware, bicycle CKD without premium branding), and you are buying in volume. This is the workhorse SKU for Ludhiana and covers the majority of Focal Point demand.
Choose the Okoume face when…
The lid or visible face matters — branded woollens, premium bicycle exports, anything where the buyer at the other end opens the crate in a showroom or distributor warehouse and surface appearance reflects on the brand. An Okoume face is also lighter for the same thickness, which helps when ocean freight is charged by weight.
Use BWR / shuttering ply when…
Crates will be reused, are exposed to outdoor staging in monsoon, carry forging or heavy-machinery loads, or you are doing container floor replacement. BWR is the moisture-and-load answer; it is not the right call for light hosiery cases where you are paying for performance you do not need.
FAQ
Common questions on the Ludhiana lane
What is the minimum order for shipping from Kochi to Ludhiana?
Full-truck-load is the economical unit on this lane. Below FTL, freight per sheet rises sharply and transit times stretch unpredictably through transhipment hubs. Most Ludhiana buyers consolidate a 3–4 week requirement into one truck.
How are payment and delivery handled at this distance?
Typical sequence: WhatsApp or phone qualification (thickness, size, monthly volume, delivery point), proforma invoice from us with ex-factory, transport and GST broken out, advance against PI, dispatch, balance against POD/lorry receipt. Detention at Ludhiana drop-off is on the buyer's account.
Do you supply finished crates, or only raw plywood and timber?
We manufacture packing-grade plywood and sawn timber, and can build crates and pallets to your drawing. For one-way export volume, many Ludhiana exporters prefer crate assembly at a local fabricator close to the packing line, both for cost and for handling rework; in that case we supply the raw inputs in the exact thickness, size and grade mix the fabricator needs. Crate timber can be supplied ISPM-15 heat-treated where the destination requires it.

Talk to us about your Ludhiana requirement
If your unit sits anywhere in the Focal Point, Industrial Area, GT Road or Doraha belts and you are buying plywood, sawn timber or container flooring material every month, it is worth a 10-minute conversation about lane economics and a planned-supply rate from Kochi. We manufacture in Perumbavoor, where our group has run plywood operations since 1986, and we will ask three things: thickness and size mix, monthly volume, and the exact drop-off point. From there we build a proforma you can compare line-for-line against your current source. Request a quote with those three inputs, or browse the resource hub for grade-selection notes, crate specs and packing-case literature before you reach out.
