Packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets for Bhopal's heavy-engineering and rolling-stock belt

We manufacture the packing-grade plywood, sea-worthy crates, sawn-timber framing and pallets that central India's transformer, switchgear and graphite-electrode makers crate their loads in. Our group has run manufacturing out of Perumbavoor since 1986, and we ship the full range north into Bhopal, Mandideep and Govindpura with a working load plan.

The industrial picture

Where Bhopal's packing-plywood demand actually sits

Bhopal sits at one of the heaviest engineering and rolling-stock junctions in central India. A plant that builds a 200-tonne transformer body does not ship it in cardboard, and a railway bogie frame coming out of the city's coach-works does not survive the trip to Mumbai port on a soft pallet. That is why plywood — specifically heavy-duty packing-grade plywood, ISPM-15 crating timber, four-way pallets and container flooring — flows into the Bhopal industrial belt in volumes most outsiders underestimate.

The packing-plywood demand in and around Bhopal clusters in four pockets, and each one has a slightly different load profile:

  • The heavy-electrical complex (Piplani / Govindpura). Power and traction transformers, switchgear, hydro and turbo-generator components and traction motors. Loads here run from a few hundred kilograms up to multi-tonne single pieces that go out as bolted-down sea-worthy crates with internal cradles and desiccant pockets.
  • Govindpura Industrial Estate. One of the state development corporation's oldest estates — mixed engineering, auto components, capital-goods sub-assemblies, electrical panels and cable drums. Mid-weight crating, recurring pallet demand and a steady appetite for packing-grade ply at 12 mm and 18 mm.
  • Mandideep Industrial Area. Roughly 23 km south of Bhopal on NH-46, anchored by a large graphite-electrode plant, pharmaceutical units, consumer-goods makers and electrical-equipment manufacturers. Heavy export crates for graphite electrodes, white-goods cartons over wooden pallets and a healthy run of commercial-grade ply for tier-2 assemblers.
  • Coach-works and defence supply chains (Nishatpura). Railway coach interior fit-out parts, defence-vehicle sub-assemblies and ordnance support equipment all move in bolted, ISPM-15 stamped wooden cases.

The common thread: heavy point loads, long inland rail and road moves to Mundra Port, JNPT or Chennai, and a non-negotiable need for ISPM-15 compliance on anything going overseas. That puts plywood squarely in the bill of materials — not as a finish material but as a structural skin on engineered crates.

What we ship

The four things we send into the Bhopal belt

Most Bhopal-bound dispatches out of our Kochi works fall into four buckets. With 40+ years of group manufacturing behind the operation, that experience shows up most clearly in how the panels are pressed, edge-sealed and stacked for a roughly 1,800 km trip.

Packing-grade plywood (MR-Packing)

Our workhorse for crate skins. Hardwood core, phenolic glue line for moisture tolerance under tarpaulin, sanded both sides, and pressed to hold nailing in the 1.5 mm–2 mm shank range without splitting along the edge. Common Bhopal-bound thicknesses:

ThicknessTypical Bhopal useSheet sizes shipped
6 mmLight crate tops, internal partitions, dunnage liners8x4, 7x4
8–10 mmMid-weight crate sides for switchgear and auto components8x4, 7x4, 6x4
12 mmThe default for Govindpura and Mandideep general engineering crates8x4, 7x4, 6x4
15–16 mmHeavy transformer side-panels, base sheathing8x4 standard, cut to spec
18 mmBolted crate floors, container internal flooring, heavy-duty pallet decks8x4, custom cuts

BWR-grade plywood with Okoume or Gurjan face

For export-grade crates that sit on a deck during monsoon transhipment, or that need a cleaner finish for branded equipment, we offer the BWR grade with an Okoume or Gurjan veneer face. Okoume gives a light, uniform face that takes stencilling well; Gurjan gives a harder, denser face for repeated handling. Both are pressed on the same BWR glue line — the face veneer is the option, not a separate grade.

Sawn timber for crate frames

Mostly rubberwood and jackwood scantlings in the 50x50 mm, 75x50 mm and 100x75 mm sections that crate makers buy by the cubic foot. ISPM-15 heat-treated and stamped where the buyer needs export documentation. This is the framing inside which the plywood skins sit.

Pallets and container flooring

Four-way entry pallets in the standard 1200x1000 mm and 1200x800 mm footprints, plus custom decks for non-standard equipment bases. For container flooring on flat-rack or open-top moves out of the Mandideep ICD, 18 mm packing ply on hardwood bearers is the typical build.

Logistics

The Kochi-to-Bhopal lane

The lane is roughly 1,750–1,850 km depending on the drop point inside the industrial belt, and we run it three ways depending on order size and urgency:

ModeBest forTransit
Full-truck road (32-ft SXL or 22-ft container truck)Orders of 18–28 tonnes; full 8x4 sheets loaded flat5–7 days door-to-door
LCL / part-load (Ernakulam–Nagpur–Bhopal corridor)Orders below ~10 tonnes; sample and trial lots8–10 days
Containerised rail via Cochin Port / ICD MandideepVery large repeat orders; unloading inside the estateSlower booking, lower per-tonne freight

Full-truck road is the default: transit via NH-66 to Bengaluru, NH-44/NH-46 north through Hyderabad and Nagpur, and into Bhopal from the south. For very large repeat orders we move through ICD Mandideep on rail rakes — a slower booking cycle, but per-tonne freight drops meaningfully and unloading happens inside the industrial estate rather than at a city godown.

Freight is quoted FOR-Bhopal (or FOR-Mandideep / FOR-Govindpura) inclusive, with unloading separate. We pad the transit estimate with a one-day buffer for monsoon-season ghat closures on the Western Ghats stretch.

Choosing a grade

Which grade for which Bhopal load

A quick rule-of-thumb the procurement desks at the bigger Bhopal packing units already follow:

  • Pick MR-Packing grade when the crate is going on a covered truck, transhipped within India, and used once. This is around 70% of Govindpura and Mandideep volume — lower price, perfectly adequate moisture tolerance under a tarp.
  • Pick BWR with an Okoume face when the crate is going overseas (typically through JNPT or Mundra Port), will sit on a port apron in monsoon, and needs to look presentable when the customer opens it. Heavy electricals from Piplani and graphite electrodes from Mandideep usually take this spec.
  • Pick BWR with a Gurjan face when the crate will be reused or repeatedly handled — captive returnable packaging, defence sub-assembly cases, railway sub-assembly cradles.
  • Pick shuttering ply if the buyer is a civil contractor at a new plant site, not a packing-case maker. We flag this distinction up front because the price points differ and the spec is film-faced, not packing-grade.

FAQ

Common questions from Bhopal buyers

Do you supply ISPM-15 stamped material direct, or only the plywood?

Both. The plywood itself does not need ISPM-15 — it is an engineered product and exempt. The sawn-timber framing does, and we supply heat-treated and stamped scantlings on request, with the treatment certificate.

What's the minimum order to make the Kochi–Bhopal lane economical?

For full-truck road, around 18 tonnes of plywood (roughly one 32-ft truck densely loaded). Below that, part-load works, but freight per sheet goes up by 15–25%.

Can you cut sheets to size at the Kochi end?

Yes. For repeat sizes we cut to spec before loading — it saves wastage at the Bhopal end and lets a packing unit nail directly without a CNC setup. Charged at a flat per-cut rate, quoted with the PI.
