Packing plywood, crates and pallets for Jabalpur's defence, marble and engineering buyers

We manufacture packing-grade plywood, built crates, pallets and container flooring for Jabalpur's ordnance ancillaries, marble processors and heavy-engineering shops. Our group has pressed and shipped industrial plywood from Perumbavoor since 1986, and the Kochi to Jabalpur lane is a well-worn route for us.

The industrial picture

One of the few cities where defence, marble and engineering share a postcode

Jabalpur is one of the few Indian cities where defence ordnance, marble processing and heavy engineering all sit inside the same municipal limits. That mix produces steady, year-round demand for industrial packing that has very little tolerance for failure. A defence consignment cannot arrive with a split crate, and a marble slab cannot ride 1,700 km on a pallet that delaminates the first time it sees a Madhya Pradesh monsoon. The demand splits cleanly into three blocks.

Defence and ordnance cluster

Jabalpur anchors a large defence-manufacturing cluster — ordnance and armament works, a military-vehicle plant at Khamaria, an explosives and ammunition unit and a heavy iron foundry. Around them sits a long tail of MSME ancillaries machining components, sub-assemblies and spares. All of this output ships by road or rail in wooden cases built to military packing standards: heavy-duty ply skins, sawn-timber framing and tight dimensional tolerances, because the cases often have to fit defined rail-wagon or container footprints.

Marble, limestone and mineral processing

Jabalpur district and the surrounding Katni–Satna belt are major marble and limestone hubs. Processors here cut, polish and crate slabs for buyers in Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Hyderabad, and for export through Mundra and Nhava Sheva. Slab crates are a specific animal — A-frame or cradle-style, carrying serious point loads, and needing both packing ply for the cradle deck and sawn timber for the structural frame. Marble dust, which the district produces in huge quantities, is itself shipped in bags on wooden pallets to cement, paint and chemical buyers.

General engineering and the industrial estates

The Richhai, Adhartal and Umaria-Dungaria industrial estates host transformer winding shops, foundries, casting units and electrical-equipment makers. Anything heavy, fragile or export-bound from these belts moves in plywood-skinned cases. Add the cable-drum work that feeds power-transmission projects across central India, and demand for 12 mm to 18 mm packing ply stays constant.

What we ship

Heavy, durable packing — built for the load, not the showroom

Demand on this lane skews to heavy, durable packing rather than furniture-grade ply. The mix we manufacture and move most often into Jabalpur:

Packing-grade plywood

Commercial and rubberwood-core packing ply in 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm and 18 mm thicknesses, standard 8 ft × 4 ft sheets. The 12 mm and 15 mm boards are the bread-and-butter sizes for defence and engineering cases. The 18 mm goes into base panels, cradle decks for marble crates and container-floor patches; 6 mm and 8 mm serve as case lids and internal partitions. Every board is pressed for case-making, so we optimise for nail-holding, screw retention, panel rigidity and moisture tolerance rather than face cosmetics.

Built crates and cases

For buyers who want to skip the carpentry step, we supply finished crates built to drawing: plywood skins over sawn jackwood or rubberwood framing, corner blocks, base runners, lifting cleats and ISPM-15 heat-treated stamping where the crate is heading for export. Typical sizes range from compact ammunition-grade cases up to engineering-equipment cases over 2 m long.

Pallets and container flooring

Standard four-way pallets in 1200 × 1000 mm and 1100 × 1100 mm, plus custom sizes for marble-slab cradles. For container-loading customers, 18 mm and 25 mm plywood floor sheets that absorb point loads and survive forklift traffic.

Sawn timber

Jackwood runners at quarter-inch-minus tolerance for case framing, and rubberwood runners cut to buyer specification. Sawn timber is sold by the cubic foot, ex-factory.

Logistics

Kochi to Jabalpur — the logistics reality

The road distance from Kochi to Jabalpur runs roughly 1,650 to 1,750 km depending on route. The standard trucking lane goes Kochi – Bangalore – Hyderabad – Nagpur – Jabalpur, and a fully loaded multi-axle truck completes the run in 5 to 7 days door-to-door. For container loads heading to Mumbai or Mundra for export, the economics often work better as Kochi to Mumbai by sea plus Mumbai to Jabalpur by road; for direct factory-delivered orders into Jabalpur, road is the standard. Three things matter on this lane:

  • Load planning. A 32 ft single-axle takes around 9 tonnes of packing ply; a 22 ft truck around 6 tonnes. We share a loading plan with truck capacity, headroom and unloading charge before despatch, so the buyer is not surprised at the gate.
  • Monsoon protection. The central-India leg can see heavy rain. Loads are tarped and the buyer-side unloading sequence is briefed in advance.
  • GST and e-way bill. All ex-factory rates exclude GST and transport, and we generate the e-way bill from the Kochi-side dispatch.

For export crates leaving on the long sea leg through Mundra or Nhava Sheva, we apply ISPM-15 heat treatment and IPPC stamping so the consignment clears phytosanitary checks at destination.

Choosing a grade

Which grade fits which Jabalpur load

A quick operator's guide for the city's typical applications:

End useRecommended gradeTypical thickness
Defence ordnance cases (domestic movement)Commercial packing ply12 mm skins, 18 mm base
Defence or engineering export cases (ISPM-15)BWR packing ply + heat-treated framing12–15 mm skins, 18 mm base
Marble slab A-frame cratesCommercial packing ply + jackwood runners18 mm cradle deck
Cable drums (transformer / power projects)Commercial packing ply12–15 mm
Container floor patchingBWR or shuttering ply18–25 mm
Construction shuttering on siteFilm-faced shuttering ply12–18 mm

An Okoume face veneer is a finishing option on our packing and BWR grades, not a separate grade. It is generally over-spec for domestic Jabalpur use and earns its premium on long-leg sea export, or when the buyer wants a clean, uniform face for branding. Most local defence and marble work is served better, and more economically, by the standard MR-packing range.

FAQ

Common questions on the Jabalpur lane

Do you ship single-truck loads to Jabalpur or only containers?

Both. A typical first order is one 22 ft or 32 ft truck of mixed thicknesses. Larger marble-export buyers and defence ancillaries often build up to a 20 ft container equivalent per dispatch. We size the dispatch to what the buyer can unload in a single shift.

Can you build to a defence or ordnance drawing?

Yes. Our group has manufactured packing cases to drawing-spec for forty years across defence, engineering and export sectors. Share the drawing, intended consignment weight, transport mode and any ISPM-15 or sealing requirement, and we quote built-crate price per piece.

What are payment terms for a first dispatch to Jabalpur?

First-order standard is advance against proforma invoice, with rates ex-factory and GST plus transport extra. Repeat customers move to part-advance, balance-against-LR terms once the relationship is established.
