Packing plywood, crates and pallets for Gwalior's stone, paper and Malanpur engineering exporters

We manufacture packing-grade plywood, Okoume-faced ply, crates and pallets for shippers across the Gwalior division. Our group has produced plywood in Perumbavoor since 1986, and we dispatch direct from Kochi to the Malanpur estate and the Bilaua stone belt.

The industrial picture

A stone city, a paper city and a quiet engineering city

Gwalior sits at an unusual junction in central India. It is a stone city, a paper city and a quiet engineering city all at once, and each of those industries ends at the same packaging question: where do we get reliable packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets without the lead time killing the shipment. Gwalior is the administrative and logistics anchor for a roughly 50 km industrial corridor that runs north toward Malanpur and south toward Dabra, and the packaging demand splits into three very different buyer profiles, each with its own crate logic.

Malanpur industrial area (AKVN / MPIDC)

Malanpur, about 40 km north of Gwalior on NH-44, is the largest organised manufacturing belt in the region. The estate hosts FMCG, food processing, dairy, glass containers, auto-ancillary fabrication and a cluster of engineering units. The plywood flow into Malanpur is mostly export crates for engineering goods, heat-treated pallets to ISPM-15 spec for outbound containers, and bulk-form packing ply for in-house carpentry shops that build their own one-off crates.

Stone belt — Bilaua, Mehgaon, Karahiya

The Bilaua–Karahiya sandstone belt south-east of Gwalior is one of India's larger dimensional-stone clusters, feeding both domestic infrastructure and export markets in the GCC, EU and US. Stone exporters need very specific crate construction: heavy-duty wooden bases, vertical bracing and packing-ply skins that survive a 30 to 40 day sea voyage with a dense, brittle load that shifts hard if the crate flexes. Mistakes here are expensive; a cracked slab is a write-off.

Paper roll and converter cluster

Paper roll packaging, both for the regional mill ecosystem and for the secondary converter and printer cluster around Gwalior, needs wide, flat plywood sheets for end-caps on jumbo reels and for laminated roll cradles on truck beds. Specs here are tighter than crate work: end-caps must sit flush against the reel face without warping, which rules out lower-density commercial plywood.

Handloom and Chanderi adjacency

The Gwalior division also acts as a forwarding hub for Chanderi and Maheshwar handloom exports. Volumes are smaller, but premium textile shippers ask for clean, sanded, non-staining packing ply for inner cases, a useful niche where our Okoume-faced packing grade earns its premium.

What we ship

Four product groups built for Gwalior's three buyer profiles

Most loads heading to Gwalior from our Kochi yard fall into one of four product groups. The table below summarises the typical specs and use-cases.

ProductTypical specBest use in Gwalior
Packing-grade plywood (MR / commercial)6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 mm; 8x4 ft sheets; hardwood/rubberwood coreStone crate skins, in-house carpentry feed, general export crating at Malanpur
Okoume-faced packing ply9–18 mm; light, uniform face, clean grainPremium engineering exports, FMCG display crates, textile inner cases
BWR / shuttering plywood12–18 mm; phenolic film face; reusableConcrete formwork on Gwalior smart-city and Malanpur civil works
Pre-built crates, pallets, container flooringBuilt to drawing; ISPM-15 HT stamp on requestStone exporters, engineering exporters, container line repairs

Crate construction we manufacture

For stone exporters we build crates with full-thickness 18 mm packing-ply skins on hardwood frames, with diagonal bracing inside; for engineering goods we use a lighter 12 mm or 14 mm skin with a four-way entry pallet base. Pallet sizes are typically 1200 x 800 mm (Euro), 1200 x 1000 mm (standard) or made to order for container optimisation. Container flooring goes out as 28 mm phenolic-bonded panels in 2440 x 1220 mm sheets for ISO container repair shops. Okoume is a face-veneer option on our packing and BWR grades, not a separate product, so you can specify it wherever a clean, uniform face matters.

Logistics

The Kochi to Gwalior lane

The Kochi–Gwalior road lane is roughly 2,000 km. Truck transit is typically 5 to 7 days door-to-door depending on whether you take a single full-truck-load (FTL) or share space on a part-load. Most of our Gwalior dispatches move FTL on 32-ft single-axle or multi-axle trailers, routed Kochi → Bengaluru → Hyderabad → Nagpur → Bhopal → Gwalior, taking NH-44 for the northern stretch. A 32-ft trailer carries roughly 18 to 22 tonnes of packing plywood depending on thickness mix, enough for a meaningful month's stock for a mid-size stone exporter or a Malanpur engineering shop.

For very large planned dispatches we sometimes route via rail or via a coastal-then-road combination through a west-coast port, but for most Gwalior customers the direct road FTL out of Kochi is the simplest and most predictable option. We quote ex-factory Kochi and ex-Gwalior delivered, so you can compare against your local options on a like-for-like basis.

ISPM-15 and the export crate question

Anything leaving India in a sealed container with wood packaging needs ISPM-15 heat treatment with the IPPC stamp. We can supply pre-treated and stamped crates and pallets ex-Kochi, or supply the raw packing ply and let your local crate builder in Malanpur handle assembly and HT treatment locally, whichever maths is better for your lane.

Choosing a grade

Which product, when

A few rules of thumb we share with first-time Gwalior buyers:

  • Stone crate skins, domestic moves: 12–14 mm commercial packing ply. Cost-controlled, holds up well on short and medium hauls.
  • Stone export crates, sea freight: 16–18 mm packing-ply skins, full hardwood frame, ISPM-15 stamped. Do not under-spec the skin; slab cracks cost ten times the saving.
  • Engineering export crates from Malanpur: 12 mm Okoume-faced ply if the buyer cares about appearance; 12 mm commercial packing ply if not.
  • Paper reel end-caps: 18 mm flat, low-warp packing ply, or Okoume-faced for the cleanest face.
  • Civil and infra formwork (smart city, road overbridges): 12 or 18 mm phenolic-film BWR shuttering ply. Reusable for 20-plus pours when handled properly.
  • Textile inner cases: Okoume-faced, non-staining, sanded; a small premium worth paying.

FAQ

Gwalior buyer questions

Do you sell through Gwalior dealers or only direct?

Both. We supply direct ex-Kochi to industrial buyers in the Gwalior, Malanpur and Bilaua belts, and we also work with stockists in Madhya Pradesh who carry our packing range. For a one-off crate run, direct usually makes sense; for ongoing buffer stock, a local dealer relationship is often easier.

What is the minimum order size you'll send to Gwalior?

For ex-Kochi dispatch the economics start to work above roughly 400 to 500 sheets, a comfortable FTL share. Below that we either consolidate with another Gwalior-bound load or quote part-load via a transport aggregator. Both work, but FTL is the cleanest.

Can you supply ISPM-15 stamped crates directly?

Yes. We can supply heat-treated, IPPC-stamped crates and pallets built to your drawing, dispatched ready to use. Alternatively we supply the raw packing ply and your local crate builder handles assembly and the HT stamp in Gwalior. We are happy to quote both options so you can compare.
