Packing-grade plywood, export crates and pallets for Aurangabad's auto and engineering belts
We manufacture the packing-grade plywood, crates and pallets that Aurangabad's Waluj, Shendra and Chikalthana MIDC estates load onto export-bound trucks every week. Built in Perumbavoor by a group that has manufactured plywood and sawn timber since 1986, shipped direct on the Kochi lane.
The industrial picture
Four MIDC belts, one plywood pull
Aurangabad — officially Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar since 2023 — is one of the densest engineering-export belts in central India. Between the Waluj, Shendra and Chikalthana MIDC estates the city pushes out auto components, two-wheelers, pharma machinery, cooking-range appliances and beer and spirits, much of it crated and shipped to JNPT (Nhava Sheva), Mundra and onward to Europe, the Middle East and ASEAN. Every CKD pack, every sea-worthy crate, every export pallet starts with one unforgiving input: plywood that does not blister on the truck, does not snap on the forklift, and does not get rejected at the inspection stamp.
Aurangabad is not one factory cluster — it is roughly four, stitched together by NH-52 and NH-753 and now plugged into the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) through the AURIC node at Shendra-Bidkin. The packing-grade plywood demand profile differs from belt to belt, so it helps to map them before talking material.
Waluj MIDC
The original 1980s estate west of the city, anchored by a large two-wheeler plant and a deep tier-1 and tier-2 supplier base around forgings, transmissions, sheet-metal stamping and plastic mouldings. Demand here is dominated by CKD and SKD crates for auto components moving to overseas assembly lines, plus heavy pallets for inter-plant movement.
Shendra and Bidkin (AURIC / DMIC)
The newer corridor estates east of the city. Shendra hosts large OEM-class plants — passenger-vehicle, premium two-wheeler, EV-cell and aerospace-component lines — while Bidkin is filling up with mid-sized engineering, electronics and food-processing units. Crate sizes here run larger (full-engine and gearbox crates, machine bases), and ISPM-15 compliance is non-negotiable because most of the output is export-bound.
Chikalthana MIDC and the pharma belt
Chikalthana sits next to the airport and is heavier on pharma, packaging machinery and white-goods assembly. The plywood pull here is a mix of machinery export crates (tall, lightweight, often single-trip) and cleanroom-equipment packing where surface finish on the inner face matters.
Paithan and the upstream auto-feeder lane
South of the city on the Godavari, Paithan MIDC feeds Waluj with castings, hoses and rubber parts. Smaller crate volumes, but steady pallet demand for bulk component movement.
What we ship
Three product families cover the belt
Three product families cover roughly 90% of what the belt consumes from us. Pricing is ex-Perumbavoor, GST and freight extra, and our standing rule is a flat ₹2.50/sq.ft margin over purchase rate — so quotes are short, defensible and easy for a purchase head to compare.
1. Packing-grade plywood (commercial / rubberwood core)
This is the workhorse — MR-bonded, hardwood-core packing ply for crate walls, lids, bases and pallet decks. Standard thicknesses we manufacture for this lane:
| Thickness | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 6 mm and 8 mm | Light component cartons, partition inserts, lid skins |
| 10 mm and 12 mm | Dominant CKD/SKD crate-wall thickness for auto components |
| 15 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm | Heavy machinery crates, gearbox and engine bases, container-lashed export packs |
Sheet size is 8x4 ft standard; we cut to size at our facilities when a buyer is running a fixed BOM, for example a recurring CKD pack for a tier-1 transmission maker. Faces can be specified as Okoume or Gurjan veneer when the surface needs to look export-grade — Okoume and Gurjan are veneer options on the MR-Packing and BWR boards, not separate grades.
2. Sea-worthy crates and ISPM-15 pallets
Aurangabad's export volume means most plywood we ship lands inside a fabricated crate or pallet within days. We supply both as semi-knock-down kits (flat-packed boards with cleat schedule) and as finished assemblies. Pallet sizes are mostly 1200x800 (Euro) and 1200x1000 (ISO) for European auto buyers, plus 1100x1100 for Japanese OEMs. ISPM-15 heat-treatment stamping is handled on the sawn-timber components — the plywood itself is exempt under ISPM-15, which simplifies the customs story for the buyer.
3. Container flooring and heavy-duty BWR ply
For machinery exporters whose loads exceed roughly 3 tonnes on a single base, we manufacture 18 mm BWR (phenolic-bonded) hardwood ply as container-floor reinforcement and base-frame planking. This is the same product family used in reefer rebuilds and dry-container patching.
Logistics
Kochi to Aurangabad — the lane
It is a ~1,100 km road haul. The clean route is Kochi → Bengaluru (NH-544 / NH-44) → Hyderabad (NH-44) → Solapur (NH-65) → Aurangabad (NH-52). On a 32-ft single-axle or 22-ft container truck the realistic transit is 4 to 5 days door-to-door, depending on Ghat-section weather and how the buyer schedules unloading.
| Mode | Capacity | Typical use | Indicative transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32-ft single-axle truck | ~16 t / ~9,000 sq.ft of 12 mm | Full-load mixed thickness orders | 4-5 days |
| 22-ft container truck | ~9 t / ~5,000 sq.ft of 12 mm | Mid-volume orders, MIDC unloading | 4-5 days |
| Part-load consolidator | 2-5 t | Trial orders, small crate batches | 6-8 days |
For export shipments where the buyer is consolidating multiple suppliers, an alternative is FOB Cochin → JNPT coastal feeder, with the plywood landing at the buyer's CFA in Nhava Sheva and trucking the last 350 km to Aurangabad. We rarely recommend it for inland Aurangabad delivery — direct road from Perumbavoor is cheaper and faster — but it is the right answer when the cargo is being containerised for re-export.
Choosing a grade
Which board for which load
A quick way to think about specification, written the way a packing engineer would brief a junior:
- If the crate is single-trip, sea-freight, and load is under 1.5 t per crate — 12 mm MR packing ply, commercial face. This is the bulk of Waluj's CKD pack.
- If the export pack must look presentable (premium two-wheeler, aerospace, medical equipment) — 12 mm packing ply with Okoume or Gurjan face veneer. Surface uplift, same core.
- If the load is over 3 t or the crate will be re-used (returnable bin loop with a European OEM) — step up to 15 or 18 mm BWR hardwood ply, phenolic-bonded.
- If the deliverable is a base or floor that takes forklift point-load — 18 mm BWR, period. Container flooring lives here.
- If the spec sheet asks for "shuttering ply" — that is a construction-grade board (formwork for concrete). It is not the right input for a CKD crate. We manufacture both, but do not let the two product families get confused in the BOM.
FAQ
Aurangabad buyer questions
Do you handle ISPM-15 compliance end-to-end?
Yes for the sawn-timber components of the crate (cleats, runners, skids) — these are heat-treated and stamped at an IPPC-registered facility. The plywood itself is exempt from ISPM-15 because it is a processed wood product, which simplifies the export documentation.
What is the minimum order you ship to Aurangabad?
Economically, a full truckload (around ₹6-8 lakh of mixed packing ply) is the cleanest unit. We do support part-loads through consolidators for trial orders and one-off crate batches, with a freight uplift.
Can you cut to size and pre-drill for our crate BOM?
Yes. On recurring orders we work off the buyer's cut-list and ship sized panels, which removes the saw-mill step at the Aurangabad end. Useful when in-house carpentry capacity is the bottleneck.
