Packing plywood, crates, pallets and container flooring for Kanpur's leather, defence and fertiliser belts
We manufacture packing-grade plywood, export crates, pallets and container flooring for Kanpur's tanneries, ordnance shops and engineering job-shops. Our group has run manufacturing in Perumbavoor since 1986, and we ship the 2,300 km north on a regular schedule.
The industrial picture
Three industrial currents that all end in a wooden box
Kanpur runs on three flows that each generate steady demand for packing plywood: finished leather goods bound for European and US buyers, ordnance and defence components moving to military depots across India, and fertiliser and chemical drums travelling inland by rail. Every one of those loads is crated, palletised or floored in plywood before it leaves the city.
Kanpur is the leather capital of India. The Jajmau cluster on the south bank of the Ganga concentrates more than 350 tanneries and finishing units, and the goods that leave it — saddlery, full-grain leather garments, industrial gloves, shoe uppers — are almost all crated in plywood before they hit a 20-ft container at ICD Panki or move overland to Nhava Sheva and Mundra. Beyond leather, the city carries weight in defence, ordnance and engineering:
- Ordnance and small-arms factories — small arms, ammunition and field equipment that ship to depots in ISPM-15-compliant crates.
- Field-gun and ordnance-equipment works — large, heavy castings and assemblies needing custom-built skids and crates.
- Panki Industrial Area — fertiliser plants, engineering and pharma in the surrounding belt.
- Dada Nagar and Fazalganj industrial estates — hosiery, textile machinery, auto components and a long bench of engineering job-shops.
- UPSIDC Site IV and V at Panki and the Jajmau Leather Cluster (CETP zone) — concentrations of MSME exporters who order plywood by the truckload.
Add the Kanpur–Lucknow corridor on NH-27 and the upcoming Defence Industrial Corridor node at Sandila, and you get a city whose packaging demand is denser than its sticker would suggest.
What we ship
Four products that leave our gate for Kanpur
Packing-grade plywood (commercial / rubberwood)
This is the workhorse and most of what moves to Kanpur. We supply 8 ft × 4 ft sheets in the standard packing thicknesses. Leather exporters and engineering crate-makers in Dada Nagar typically buy 8 mm and 10 mm for walls and lids, then step up to 18 mm for the bottom skid where a 250–500 kg load sits over a forklift slot. Rates are EX-FACTORY, GST and freight extra; we quote against your size and monthly draw rather than off a printed list.
| Thickness | Typical use in the crate |
|---|---|
| 6–8 mm | Light walls and lids, low-weight leather and hosiery cartons |
| 10–12 mm | Standard crate walls; ISPM-15 export crate sides |
| 14–16 mm | Heavier walls and reinforced lids |
| 18 mm | Bottom skid / base under forklift entry, 250–500 kg loads |
ISPM-15 export crates
For Jajmau leather exporters and ordnance shipments leaving the country, ISPM-15 heat-treated, IPPC-stamped crates are mandatory. We build to your packing list — knock-down (KD) for inland freight efficiency, or pre-assembled where the buyer packs in-house. Standard wall is 12 mm packing ply on a 50 × 75 mm rubberwood or hardwood frame; bottoms run 18 mm over 75 × 100 mm bearers for forklift entry. The IPPC mark and treatment certificate travel with each crate.
Wooden pallets
Four-way entry, perimeter-base pallets in the standard 1200 × 1000 mm and 1200 × 800 mm Euro footprint, plus 1100 × 1100 mm for containers heading to GCC and Vietnam buyers via Kanpur consolidators. Deckboards are 18 mm packing ply or 22 mm sawn rubberwood depending on dynamic load. Heat-treated stamping available on order.
Container flooring plywood
28 mm phenolic-bonded film-faced ply in the 2400 × 1200 mm container floor size, for reefers and dry vans being refurbished at workshops around Panki and along the Lucknow–Kanpur highway. Edges are sealed and the surface carries an anti-skid film. We ship in bundle quantities; minimum order is typically a full truck.
Logistics
Kochi to Kanpur, the 2,300 km lane
The lane runs 2,300–2,400 km depending on origin point inside the Perumbavoor cluster. Two practical options:
| Mode | Route | Transit | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road (32-ft SXL / 22-ft) | Perumbavoor → Salem → Bangalore → Hyderabad → Nagpur → Jhansi → Kanpur | 6–8 days | Crates, pallets, mixed loads under 18 tonnes, or buyers without ICD access |
| Rail + last-mile | Cochin Port / Ernakulam → ICD Panki via container rake | 10–12 days | Full-container plywood orders to Panki and Dada Nagar; cheaper per sheet at scale |
For most Kanpur MSME orders we quote FOR (freight on road) and put a 32-ft single-axle on the route with a 14–18 tonne payload. Larger draws — 4,000+ sheets a month, typical of mid-size packing-case houses — work better through Cochin Port to ICD Panki. We can also originate from FOB Cochin for buyers nominating their own forwarder. Every export crate and pallet that needs sea-freight clearance ships ISPM-15 heat-treated and IPPC-stamped, with the treatment certificate riding with the consignment.
Choosing a grade
Which grade fits which load
Quick decision rules we use when a Kanpur buyer calls in:
- Domestic dispatch, light-to-medium loads (under 200 kg) — commercial packing-grade plywood, 8–12 mm walls, 15 mm base. Most Jajmau leather-garment exports, Fazalganj hosiery and Dada Nagar auto components fit this bracket.
- Export crates, ISPM-15, sea freight — same grade but heat-treated and IPPC-stamped, with the base stepped up to 18 mm. This is the default for Jajmau finished leather, saddlery and ordnance components moving via Nhava Sheva.
- Heavy castings, defence and ordnance equipment (over 500 kg) — BWR-grade or premium packing ply at 18 mm on a hardwood frame; for the largest pieces we recommend a sawn-timber skid base with a plywood superstructure.
- Okoume face-veneer (on the MR-Packing or BWR grades) — when carton aesthetics matter for branded leather exports or premium gift packing. Okoume is a face-veneer option, not a separate grade, and is quoted on request.
- Concrete formwork on Kanpur Metro extensions and infra projects — film-faced shuttering plywood, 12 or 18 mm, sold separately from the packing range.
FAQ
Common questions on the Kanpur lane
What is the typical lead time from order confirmation to truck arrival in Kanpur?
For a single truck of packing-grade sheets or pallets, count 10–14 days door to door — that is 2–3 days from PI confirmation to material at our loading point, then 6–8 days transit. ISPM-15 crates built to a specific packing list take longer because of the build cycle; budget 15–18 days. Container flooring is typically available within a week if the size is the standard 2400 × 1200 × 28 mm.
Do you offer ISPM-15 heat treatment and IPPC stamping?
Yes, for every export crate and pallet that needs sea-freight clearance. The treatment certificate travels with the consignment and the IPPC mark is burned onto two opposite faces of each unit. We do not ship untreated wood as "export-ready" — that is where DG-shipping rejections start.
Can you handle a recurring monthly draw rather than one-off orders?
Yes, and that is most of what we move on the Kanpur lane. Mid-size packing-case houses and leather exporters typically commit to a monthly sheet count and a fixed price for the quarter, with deliveries staggered as call-offs. That smooths the truck-load economics and protects against rate swings in the rubberwood market.
