A short lane, and why that matters more here than elsewhere
Almost everything a construction or fit-out job in the Maldives consumes arrives by sea. That makes the length of the lane a real commercial variable rather than a detail: on a short one you can order against a project’s actual progress instead of against a forecast made months earlier, hold less material on site, and re-order without the schedule absorbing the delay. Our factories sit about 40 km from Cochin Port, so a container that finishes loading in the morning can gate in at the terminal the same day.
The other half of the argument is water. Panels bound for island work face humidity in transit, humidity in storage and, often, humidity in service. The bond you specify is worth more attention here than on a dry inland job, and it is the first thing we will ask you about.
Our group has pressed plywood at Perumbavoor, Kerala since 1986. Quotes are in USD, FOB Cochin by default, and come back within one business day.
What we ship to the Maldives
Resort and marine work pulls a different mix from a packing lane — boil-proof grades and finished panels rather than one-trip cases.
| Product | Grade / spec | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Marine plywood | IS 710, BWP bond | Boil-proof. Boat work, jetties, coastal construction and wet areas. |
| BWR hardwood plywood | BWR bond | Interiors and joinery where the panel will see moisture but is not submerged or continuously wet. |
| Calibrated Okoume-face panel | Okoume face, eucalyptus core, E1 glue line available | Sanded and calibrated across the sheet; the 16 mm panel weighs about 32 kg. Bare or HPL-laminated, for furniture and fit-out. |
| Film-faced shuttering plywood | Phenolic film | Formwork for repeat concrete pours. |
| Packing-grade plywood | MR bond, IS 303 | 6, 8, 12, 15 and 18 mm typical, for cases and site packing. MR is not a wet-service grade — do not specify it where the panel will get wet. |
Mixed loads are ordinary: a container split across marine, BWR and a run of shuttering ply is a standard order rather than a special request. Cores are rubberwood and eucalyptus; faces are Okoume or Gurjan, and the species detail is on woods we use.
Import essentials for the Maldives
What your clearing agent needs to land a plywood shipment in the Maldives. We quote FCA or FOB Cochin in USD; customs duty and any import tax are added at import, on your side of the transaction, not ours.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| HS code | Heading 4412. The national item within 4412.31, 4412.33, 4412.34 and 4412.39 turns on panel construction and individual ply thickness as well as face species; finished cases, pallets and drums are generally considered under 4415. Your broker confirms the line, and we state the code we ship under on the commercial invoice. |
| Customs duty and import tax | Not quoted by us and not in our price. Your clearing agent confirms the tariff line and the rate in force. Import tax is not charged on CIF alone: the base is the customs value plus customs duty, and local law may add fees and other incidental charges. The Maldives applies 0% customs duty to plywood under HS 4412, for all origins — the SAFTA preference India and the Maldives both hold has nothing left to reduce, since the general rate is already nil. GST is 8% (the general goods rate; the 17% Tourism GST does not apply to a plywood import), charged at import. |
| Clears at | The discharge port you nominate. We sell FOB Cochin, so your forwarder books the carriage and names the port; it then goes on the proforma invoice. |
| Standards and certification | Nothing is included by default. Each mill holds its own BIS licence, so no single CM/L number covers everything we sell; any certificate or test report that applies to your order is named on the quotation by holder, number and product scope. FSC chain of custody or a CE Declaration of Performance has to be asked for at enquiry — it decides which mill your order is placed with and cannot be added after the panels are pressed. Plant & Animal Quarantine inspection applies to all cargo at first point of entry, but manufactured wood products — plywood, particle board, OSB, veneer — are explicitly exempt from the fumigation/treatment-certificate requirement that applies to raw or sawn timber; the panel’s own heat-and-pressure manufacture is treated as sufficient. |
| Documents we provide | Commercial invoice, packing list with net and gross weights, and the Bill of Lading with every shipment. A Certificate of Origin where the destination, bank or contract requires one. A treatment or fumigation certificate only where that treatment was actually carried out, and a phytosanitary certificate only where the commodity or destination rules call for one. |
| ISPM-15 | Plywood panels are exempt — processed wood, no stamp and no fumigation certificate. Solid-wood packing such as pallets, runners and bearers does fall under the standard, and ours is treated and stamped. |
| Container weight | We load to the lower of the ship-line payload and the road weight limit at your end. The general ship-line payload is about 26.7 tonnes into a 40ft; the figure that applies to your booking is confirmed on the proforma invoice. Onward handling from the port of discharge to an island site is arranged by you. |
| Typical transit from Cochin | To Malé via transshipment at Colombo, Sri Lanka — there is no direct commercial container service from Cochin. Published estimates for port-to-port timing disagree and cannot be reconciled: one puts it at 14–16 days from a detailed Colombo build-up, the other found no confirmed carrier schedule and estimates roughly 10–20 days (older references run as high as 26) once Colombo feeder-connection waits are counted. A separate fortnightly Government of India service anchored at Tuticorin carries mostly bulk cargo and is not a standard FCL booking option. |
Getting the grade right the first time
The mistake that costs money on island work is specifying by price rather than by exposure. MR-bonded packing plywood is a dry-service, one-trip material; it is the wrong panel for anything that will meet standing water, and no amount of coating fixes a glue line chosen for the wrong duty. BWR handles moisture in service. IS 710 BWP is the boil-proof grade, and it is what we would put into boat work, jetty structures and any wet area that has to last.
Each grade ships with its technical data sheet, and every shipment carries the material guarantee: the panel that arrives matches the specification sheet you quoted from. Where a mill certificate or test report applies to your order, it is named on the quotation by holder, number and scope, and released on request.
Terms and paperwork
Export quotes are in US dollars under Incoterms 2020, and always name the place the term applies to. FCA Cochin suits a sealed container handed to your carrier; FOB Cochin applies where we deliver on board the vessel you nominate; CFR and CIF are quoted where agreed at enquiry. Payment is 50 per cent advance with the order and the balance before dispatch for standard products, and 100 per cent advance for custom specifications, by bank transfer (T/T).
Pre-shipment inspection is welcome, by you or any third-party agency you appoint, and we hold the goods for it. You get photographs and video of your container as it loads, and a packing list carrying the same weights we declare to the shipping line. The registrations behind the selling entity, each with the portal you can check it on, are on verify us before you pay.
