Eight to twelve days, and a lot of cargo that keeps going
Cochin to Singapore is a short lane by the standards of ours — 8 to 12 days port to port for a full container load, against 22 to 28 for Hamburg and 26 to 32 for the US West Coast. It is also a lane where a large share of what arrives does not stop. Cargo packed in Singapore goes on again, and the panel that only had to survive twelve days is suddenly being asked to survive the leg after that too.
That is the specification conversation worth having before you order, and it is the one thing about this lane we would want a buyer to read. Nobody imports from Kerala because Kerala is close to Singapore; the region is full of supply. They import because a particular bond, face and thickness is easier to get from a mill that presses to a sheet. Our group has done that at Perumbavoor since 1986, 40 km from Cochin Port.
We quote FOB Cochin in USD. You or your forwarder book the ocean carriage; we manufacture, pack, complete Indian export clearance and deliver on board.
Bond choice: the second voyage is the one that decides
The best predictor of grade requirement is transit time modified by the climate of the lane. Singapore is hot, humid and tropical, and 8 to 12 days out of Cochin puts BWR at the baseline for general cargo. Where the cargo is trans-shipping onward, plan around BWP for the full duration instead — our packing operators’ rule of thumb is that under ten days in a dry lane BWR is enough, and over twenty days, or anything routed through monsoon Southeast Asia, calls for BWP unless the cargo itself is low-value and replaceable.
The cost of getting this wrong is not the failed crate. It is the cargo claim, the port-side rework, the demurrage while a replacement crate is built, and a buyer relationship that gets harder to rebuild. BWR vs BWP for export packing sets out where each bond stops working and what the upgrade actually costs per container.
Tell us the whole journey the cargo faces, not just the leg to Singapore, and we will quote the bond that survives it.

Import essentials for Singapore
What your clearing agent needs to land a plywood shipment in Singapore. We quote FCA or FOB Cochin in USD; customs duty and any import tax are added at import, on your side of the transaction, not ours.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| HS code | Heading 4412. The national item within 4412.31, 4412.33, 4412.34 and 4412.39 turns on panel construction and individual ply thickness as well as face species; finished cases, pallets and drums are generally considered under 4415. Your broker confirms the line, and we state the code we ship under on the commercial invoice. |
| Customs duty and import tax | Not quoted by us and not in our price. Your clearing agent confirms the tariff line and the rate in force. Import tax is not charged on CIF alone: the base is the customs value plus customs duty, and local law may add fees and other incidental charges. Singapore does not charge customs duty on plywood — only liquor, tobacco, motor vehicles and petroleum/biodiesel products are dutiable in Singapore, so HS 4412 plywood clears duty-free regardless of origin. GST is 9%, charged at import on the CIF value. |
| Clears at | Singapore. We sell FOB Cochin, so your forwarder books the carriage; the discharge port and any onward leg go on the proforma invoice. |
| Typical transit from Cochin | 8 to 12 days port to port for a full container load. Lane climate is hot, humid and tropical. |
| Wood-packaging documentation | Worth getting right on this lane specifically. The failure that catches shipments at Singapore is not untreated wood — it is a discrepancy between the phytosanitary documentation and the facility number in the physical stamp, which holds the box pending documentary clarification, typically 48 to 72 hours. Our packing documents and marks are issued to agree with each other; send your broker’s checklist at order confirmation and we will match it. |
| Standards and certification | Nothing is included by default. Each mill holds its own BIS licence, so no single CM/L number covers everything we sell; any certificate or test report that applies to your order is named on the quotation by holder, number and product scope. FSC chain of custody or a CE Declaration of Performance has to be asked for at enquiry — it decides which mill your order is placed with and cannot be added after the panels are pressed. None specific to plywood. The one control that can apply is CITES, administered by Singapore’s National Parks Board, and only if the face-veneer species is CITES-listed — ask us to confirm the species status for your specification. A standard TradeNet import permit through a Singapore-registered importer is still required for clearance regardless. |
| Documents we provide | Commercial invoice, packing list with net and gross weights, and the Bill of Lading with every shipment. A Certificate of Origin where the destination, bank or contract requires one. A treatment or fumigation certificate only where that treatment was actually carried out, and a phytosanitary certificate only where the commodity or destination rules call for one. |
| ISPM-15 | Plywood panels are exempt — processed wood, no stamp and no fumigation certificate. Solid-wood packing such as pallets, runners and bearers does fall under the standard, and ours is treated and stamped. |
| Container weight | We load to the lower of the ship-line payload and the road weight limit at your end. The general ship-line payload is about 26.7 tonnes into a 40ft; the figure that applies to your booking is confirmed on the proforma invoice. |
Terms and the first order
Export quotes are in US dollars under Incoterms 2020, and always name the place the term applies to. FCA Cochin suits a sealed container handed to your carrier; FOB Cochin applies where we deliver on board the vessel you nominate; CFR and CIF are quoted where agreed at enquiry. Payment is 50 per cent advance with the order and the balance before dispatch for standard products, and 100 per cent advance for custom specifications, by bank transfer (T/T).
Pre-shipment inspection is welcome, by you or any third-party agency you appoint, and we hold the goods for it. You get photographs and video of your container as it loads, and a packing list carrying the same net and gross weights we declare to the shipping line. Every registration the selling entity holds, with the portal you can check it on yourself, is on verify us before you pay.
