Plywood exporter to Malaysia: Indian panels bought on spec and price

Malaysia is not short of plywood, so we will not pretend proximity is the argument. We press calibrated Okoume-faced, BWR and packing-grade panels in Perumbavoor, Kerala, and quote them FOB Cochin in USD for you to set against your local number.

Shipping direct from our plywood factory near Cochin (Kochi), India — no local stock in Malaysia.

By Edwin David, Director, Cochin Wood Industries — plywood manufacturer in Perumbavoor, Kerala. Last updated 18 July 2026.

In short: Cochin Wood Industries is a plywood manufacturer in Kerala, India. For Malaysian buyers the case is specification and price, not distance: calibrated Okoume-faced panels on a eucalyptus core, BWR hardwood plywood, packing-grade MR board to IS 303 and film-faced shuttering ply. USD quotes, FOB Cochin, replies within one business day.

Spec and price, because proximity is not on offer

Malaysia is not short of plywood. Buyers there have local supply within a day’s drive, so an importer who writes to a mill in Kerala is not looking for convenience — they are looking for a particular construction at a particular number, or for a supplier who will press to a sheet instead of selling what is already stacked. That is the whole of the honest argument on this lane, and we would rather put it plainly than dress it up.

What we bring to it: a group that has pressed plywood at Perumbavoor, Kerala since 1986, a factory 40 km from Cochin Port, and a quote that comes back in one business day with a loading plan attached. What we do not bring is a warehouse near you, a shorter lane than your domestic supplier, or a certification we have not named on the quotation.

Send the thickness, sheet size, bond, face and monthly quantity. You will have a USD figure FOB Cochin to set against your local one, and if it does not win, it does not.

What we ship to Malaysia

The constructions worth moving this far are the ones where the specification, not the freight, decides the buy.

ProductGrade / specNotes
Calibrated Okoume-face panelOkoume face, eucalyptus core, E1 glue line availableSanded and calibrated to a consistent thickness across the sheet; the 16 mm panel weighs about 32 kg. Bare or HPL-laminated, for furniture and joinery.
Packing-grade plywoodMR bond, IS 3036, 8, 12, 15 and 18 mm typical. Okoume face available on the same substrate where the crate will be inspected at destination.
BWR hardwood plywoodBWR bondThe baseline for export crating that faces a humid voyage rather than a one-trip move.
Film-faced shuttering plywoodPhenolic filmFormwork panels for repeat concrete pours.

Also out of the same port: marine plywood to IS 710 BWP, boxes and crates, pallets and container flooring ply. Cores are rubberwood and eucalyptus; faces are Okoume or Gurjan, and the difference between the two is set out in Okoume vs Gurjan plywood.

Import essentials for Malaysia

What your clearing agent needs to land a plywood shipment in Malaysia. We quote FCA or FOB Cochin in USD; customs duty and any import tax are added at import, on your side of the transaction, not ours.

ItemDetail
HS codeHeading 4412. The national item within 4412.31, 4412.33, 4412.34 and 4412.39 turns on panel construction and individual ply thickness as well as face species; finished cases, pallets and drums are generally considered under 4415. Your broker confirms the line, and we state the code we ship under on the commercial invoice.
Customs duty and import taxNot quoted by us and not in our price. Your clearing agent confirms the tariff line and the rate in force. Import tax is not charged on CIF alone: the base is the customs value plus customs duty, and local law may add excise, fees and other incidental charges. With a valid Certificate of Origin under the ASEAN–India or Malaysia–India CECA agreement, Malaysia applies 0% customs duty to plywood from India. Without that certificate the MFN duty applies instead; published sources gave differing base rates for this HS line, so ask your clearing agent to confirm the current MFN fallback if there is any risk the certificate will not be in hand at clearance. Malaysia charges Sales Tax (SST) rather than GST or VAT — 5% is the rate generally cited for wood-panel imports; confirm the exact band for your specification.
Clears atThe discharge port you nominate. We sell FOB Cochin, so your forwarder books the carriage and names the port; it then goes on the proforma invoice.
Standards and certificationNothing is included by default. Each mill holds its own BIS licence, so no single CM/L number covers everything we sell; any certificate or test report that applies to your order is named on the quotation by holder, number and product scope. FSC chain of custody or a CE Declaration of Performance has to be asked for at enquiry — it decides which mill your order is placed with and cannot be added after the panels are pressed. No SIRIM or Malaysian Standard certification is required for plywood. What Malaysia’s import schedule does require is an import licence and permit from the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) under Act 105 — normally the Malaysian buyer’s obligation, not ours, but worth confirming they hold one before committing to a ship date — and, only if the face-veneer species is CITES-listed, a matching export/import permit pair. Common commodity species such as gurjan, keruing, poplar and eucalyptus are not CITES-listed.
Documents we provideCommercial invoice, packing list with net and gross weights, and the Bill of Lading with every shipment. A Certificate of Origin where the destination, bank or contract requires one. A treatment or fumigation certificate only where that treatment was actually carried out, and a phytosanitary certificate only where the commodity or destination rules call for one.
ISPM-15Plywood panels are exempt — processed wood, no stamp and no fumigation certificate. Solid-wood packing such as pallets, runners and bearers does fall under the standard, and ours is treated and stamped.
Container weightWe load to the lower of the ship-line payload and the road weight limit at your end. The general ship-line payload is about 26.7 tonnes into a 40ft; the figure that applies to your booking is confirmed on the proforma invoice.
Typical transit from CochinPort Klang, Malaysia’s main container gateway, is the right port to plan against, but Cochin reaches it only by transshipment — typically via Colombo, sometimes Singapore — with no direct call. Transit-time estimates disagree by more than a few days across sources: 10 to 14 days in one synthesis, 12 to 20 days in another, and no carrier publishes a single Cochin to Port Klang schedule to settle it. Confirm the live number with your forwarder before quoting a date.

Bond choice on a humid lane

Transit time modified by the climate of the lane is the best predictor of which bond a crate needs. Under ten days in a dry lane, MR or BWR is enough. Hot, humid and tropical is a harder test: the condensation cycling inside a steel box is what turns a marginal glue line into a delaminated corner, and the expensive part is never the failed crate — it is the cargo claim, the rework at the port and the demurrage while a replacement is built. Where cargo packed in our panels goes on again from Malaysia, plan around BWP rather than MR. BWR vs BWP for export packing works through where each grade stops.

Terms and the first order

Export quotes are in US dollars under Incoterms 2020, and always name the place the term applies to. FCA Cochin suits a sealed container handed to your carrier; FOB Cochin applies where we deliver on board the vessel you nominate; CFR and CIF are quoted where agreed at enquiry. Payment is 50 per cent advance with the order and the balance before dispatch for standard products, and 100 per cent advance for custom specifications, by bank transfer (T/T).

Pre-shipment inspection is welcome, by you or any third-party agency you appoint, and we hold the goods for it. You get photographs and video of your container as it loads, and a packing list carrying the same weights we declare to the shipping line. Since a first order across this lane is a stranger asking for an advance, every registration the selling entity holds is listed with its government portal on verify us before you pay.

FAQ

Why import plywood from India when Malaysia has local supply?

Only two reasons hold up: a construction you cannot easily buy locally, or a better number for the same specification. We press to your sheet rather than sell you what is already stacked, and a USD FOB Cochin quote with a loading plan comes back within one business day. If it does not beat your local price, it does not.

Which port in Malaysia do you ship plywood to?

The one you nominate. We sell FOB Cochin, so your forwarder books the ocean carriage and names the discharge port; we manufacture, pack, complete Indian export clearance and deliver the goods on board. Tell us the port at enquiry and it goes on the proforma invoice.

Can I get samples before committing to a container?

Yes. Samples are available and chargeable. Most first-time buyers check the face, the thickness calibration and the core before ordering a trial container.

What are your payment terms for Malaysian buyers?

50% advance with the order and the balance before dispatch for standard products; 100% advance for custom specifications. Payment is by bank transfer (T/T), and quotes are in USD.

What HS code is plywood under for Malaysia imports?

Plywood falls under HS heading 4412 (sub-headings 4412.31, 4412.33, 4412.34 and 4412.39 by face species). We state the correct code on the commercial invoice for your clearing agent.

Do you have a plywood factory or warehouse in Malaysia?

No — Cochin Wood is an Indian plywood factory near Cochin (Kochi), Kerala. We do not hold local stock or a warehouse in Malaysia; we ship full-container loads FOB Cochin to the discharge port you nominate. You buy factory-direct from India.
